The Cabinet has today approved a proposal by Highways and Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella to construct a 5.5 kilometre long double-lane tunnel in Kandy with financial assistance from South Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund.
It will consist of two interchange points and help to reduce traffic congestion.
“With the construction of the tunnel, traffic congestion will ease in the Kandy City and nearby areas. It is to be constructed according to international standards and have safe parking and exit-entry facilities,” ministry sources said. (Kelum Bandara)

This certainly is good news for the people living in and around Kandy. But, please keep the road in front of Maligawa and road around the lake open till this tunnel is completed.

Although tunnel is a good idea, it will make structural damage to the hills of the up country, internal water flow of hills, which may ultimately lead to disasters in rainy seasons. You saw a good example in uma oya project. why cant you provide elevated roadways as a solution

Politicians waste money and get kickbacks to construct a tunnel without opening the road in front of MALIGAWA.

The true answer is to remove all business ventures and find for them a place in Katugastota. The city should be very calm and quiet fitting to a sacred city. via DM Android App

This is the preferred solution to traffic chaos in urban areas, adopted in developed countries. They are ruining Colombo by building flyovers.

hmm..with the state of vehicles plying Sri Lankan roads, wouldn't emissions be a problem in a tunnel?
