Attidiya birds fly away

16 April 2017 12:07 pm - 19     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

A A A

The large scale sewerage dumping in the Attidiya canal along the Lake road during the past two weeks, polluting the Attidiya Lake, has resulted in the disappearance of many bird species from the area, residents complained.

Attidiya wetlands were declared a bird Sanctuary in 1990.

The unbearable stench in the highly residential area is posing a major health hazard too, the residents point out.

No action has been taken by the authorities regarding the matter so far.

There is no rule of law in this land and the country has gone to DOGS!!!!

Have been living here for the past 25 years. It has never been like this. This lake was beautifully maintained upto a few months back. The question is what happened and who is responsible There seems to be no concern. Created by the Land Reclamation I believe the responsibility still lies with them to maintain this waterway. However it is anyone's guess as the airforce is on one side with a restaurant Eagles Rest which blares loud music most nights and has the lake lit up at night with water spouts. Surest way to drive the birds away. The army rehabilitation camp is on the other side - their reward for having given their limbs for this country a smelly water-front! Surely deserve better as do all citizens of this country. Over to you Minister of Environment. Give us back our Attidiya Lake.

There is a rumor that the crocodiles are in the Lake. I have never seen the lake is fully clean and clear. It always polluted edge of every corner of the lake except the specified extend which is controlled by the Air Force. No one is allowed to go to the Lake and enjoy their leisure time with their family (it always covered by fence). Only it benefits to Air Force and Residents who live around the Lake. Illegally people are fishing in the polluted area. No actions are taken against them. Final consumers of the unhygienic fishes are innocent people who have no knowledge of it.

Beautiful Sri Lanka brutalized by its lazy and dishonest people. Rumor has it that several attempts to build a garbage incinerator was not successful during previous government due to demand of bribery by politicians and officials

Birds can fly to different locations with better environment than toilets of Human Beings, eventually transforming Bird territories into a Sanctuary of Pigs. Under this scenario the best option is to change our habits also to suit the new toilet environment with an appropriate political leadership. This is happening at pilot scale in Sri Lanka. It would be a lesson for the rest of the world too.

We are a model in development ..but cannot manage garbage of any kind ..domestic. the electronic toxic and the Hospital waste .When will we learn that we should plan to avoid the hazards of urban development before planning mega cities all over the country ?

Gota had a new plan for this, but after new government came into power all changed. This Megapolise ministry useless it's like NATO no action talks only. Environmentalist

Wait a bit more another Kunu Avalanche has to take place before your dumping ground is stopped.

I am from that area and birds like cormorants, herons and egrets that we used to see everyday till last month can no longer be seen in this part of the wetland.Stench is unbearable. As someone voted for this government I must say this lake and canals were maintained fairly well during the last regime. At least there were people we could go to with our complaints.

Authorities are deaf and blind. All of them should be sent to that particular school around the same area. It actually is very sickening.

Our seat warmers get into action after tragedy occurs only. Until such time talk about their benefits and not service they supposed to render. Recent example is Meethotamulla.

Akila Hennayake Sunday, 16 April 2017 01:23 PM

"No action has been taken by the authorities regarding the matter so far." Action will be taken when tragedy occurs, when it is too late...Nobody listens to science, but horoscopes..That's the Lankan way apparently...

    Gobba Monday, 17 April 2017 02:18 PM

Gota had only plans for more White Vans, Sir, and what did he do to the Meethotamulla dump started in his UDA tenure as well.
