A 60 year old man in Ambalanthota has been arrested over the rape of a 10 year old child and is to be produced in Court today, the Ambalanthota police said. The girl was raped when she had visited a store operated by the suspect.

According to the police the child was raped inside the store and she has now been admitted to the Hambantota hospital for treatment. Police say the suspect who resides at the store had committed the crime last Saturday and was arrested yesterday. (Daily Mirror online)

the rapist is old enough to be the kids grand dad and people here are talking about law and order. Law & order does not prevent insane people committing crime

    Ravi Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:18 AM

What nonsense! The only person to be blamed is the perpertrator.

    Carmen Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:20 AM

Western culture has its own evils, but if our own culture is strong we will not be influenced towards bad morals. Parents need to socialize more with children to inculcate preferred values. Now in our old days the King if he sees a young beauty she will end up in anthakpura.... so we cannot blame the western culture itself...our kings were sex maniacs as well, including Indian kings...

Edwardo Baltazar Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:33 AM

to arrest a suspect who is residing and working in the same place it took 2 days.....bravo Sri Lanka police...

    mish Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:54 AM

Rape has nothing to do with western culture. The ones that should be blamed are the sexually frustrated, degenerate men who commit these acts against women and children (also parents should be blamed for and/or teaching their sons that they are god and women are only there to serve them)

    Ronnie Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:23 AM

Totally agree machan. In Sri Lanka people have no respect for each other, and everyone is a sex maniac because people are so oppressed. In Western Countries (and I've lived in quite a few) people really respect each other.

    Ronnie Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:24 AM

If a girl gets raped it is not her fault. Such an arab mentality to suggest otherwise. It was a 10 year old CHILD for heavens sake. It is the fault of the mentally sick 60 year old PERVERT !!!!!!!

    RajasH Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:40 AM

you mean blame the parent of the 60years old man?
are you a 60 year old kid?

    Marikar Tuesday, 13 July 2010 12:11 PM

Why are you insulting the Muslim Community?
By saying like Arabs, is this man also an Arab?
Please do not be communal !

    charlie Tuesday, 13 July 2010 12:14 PM

Well said machan, you're spot on! Why don't we teach this along our history lessons at school!

Wimal Gadjawera Tuesday, 13 July 2010 12:28 PM

It was the fault of the UN so lets go protest and stop drinking coca cola. Blaming is now part of sri lankan culture.

    citizen1 Tuesday, 13 July 2010 12:40 PM

These things have been going on for centuries, but only now being publicly exposed.

    shiran Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:16 AM

Hope no interference to rescue the culprit. We all seek the justice.

    JayDee Tuesday, 13 July 2010 01:07 PM

    Malkanthi,
I have read many of your comments which hardly make any sense. Please stop making such baseless, dumb comments. This has nothing to do with western influence.

    raj Tuesday, 13 July 2010 01:41 PM

This is the culture of Sri Lanka. Society always perceive that eleders can be trusted. It is not always true. There are predetors among elders.

    Jamal Tuesday, 13 July 2010 01:52 PM

Indeed. In many cases, elders are the worst. No matter where in the world.

    Sura Tuesday, 13 July 2010 03:32 PM

All sex maniacs should be eliminated from the society.

    menaka Tuesday, 13 July 2010 03:36 PM

yeah.. could not agree more... so according to malkanthi the 60 year old has taken lessons from the western culture??? give me a break! :D

    Manjal Tuesday, 13 July 2010 05:18 PM

There you go. I was waiting for some Buddhist-hater to bring the age-old argument. Please grow up. As if rapes never happen in christian countries.

    citizen1 Tuesday, 13 July 2010 05:24 PM

Well said! 'Naaki Visay' is an understatement for this horror of horrors.

    madawansa Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:03 PM

SO many people talking SO much about 'law and order,' but nothing is being practiced - that's why the ordinary people are suffering!

    mish Wednesday, 14 July 2010 06:51 AM

Why dress code? wow.... this ''the woman/girl wore jeans or a fitting outfit therefore she bought it on herself' mentality has to stop....as long as the clothes worn are not obscene..... besides, whether she wore a fitting outfit or covered herself up from head to toe, no woman/girl(in this instance a ten year old child!) should be subject to any type of abuse... It's the fault of a perverse man...

    Mushi Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:19 AM

No end to child abuse in SL. What a petty!!!

    desa Tuesday, 13 July 2010 05:57 AM

hang him to death...oh no no. why? because we have human rights..my foot.

    charith Tuesday, 13 July 2010 06:05 AM

    Agree with you. hang him

    Farshard Tuesday, 13 July 2010 07:24 AM

hang in sri lanka??? send that man to saudi or iran...

    pd Tuesday, 13 July 2010 07:27 AM

Iam a firm advocate of the death sentence! This type of shocking incidents proves the dire need for it! Stone him to death!

    kassa Tuesday, 13 July 2010 07:39 AM

    Hang to death.

    Josh Tuesday, 13 July 2010 07:40 AM

he is one sick person... doesnt he have kids??? that girl must have been probably his grand daughters age...

    yahiya-doha Tuesday, 13 July 2010 07:52 AM

Blame every evil thing in Sri Lankan on Western culture. Good!!

    Sumal Tuesday, 13 July 2010 07:53 AM

Killing is not a solution. We have to show compassion and that is our culture.

TERRENCE B. DE SILVA Tuesday, 13 July 2010 07:56 AM

SHAME ON YOU ALL - AND I THOUGHT WE WERE AN ASTUTE BUDDHIST COUNTRY?

    Hifaz Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:14 AM

Implement sharia law in the country, then we can see the different

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:19 AM

That's why they say " Old poison, taller than the house" ( in Sinhala, "Naaki Visay, Getath Usay")

    malkanthi Tuesday, 13 July 2010 05:57 AM

Parents are to be blamed. The western culture is invading sri lanka as a result of exposure beyond our culture & tradition, no wonder the increase of sex maniacs, it will be worst, unless proper law & order are implemented!!!

    Shamil Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:20 AM

You've got to be kidding me. Are you suggesting the parent of the raped girl imparted western culture on the girl, which lead to her being raped. Or are you suggesting the 60 yr old boutique owner was a westerner at heart.

Have you been to the west? People here in the west have more respect for each other (even Sri Lankans like us), than the respect people show each other back in Sri Lanka. A dog in the west literally gets more respect than what people show each other back in Sri Lanka.

    Shamil Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:22 AM

You'll start blaming the harrasment on buses and crowded venues on the west next. Just to make it clear, in the 6 years I've been here in the west, I haven't witnessed, or personally heard of a single case of such harrasement on public transport. Compare that to a morning of rush hour public transport in Sri Lanka
Check the statistic on rape, abuse, harrasement in Sri Lanka, compared to the west, and then see where it is more prevalent.
There are some aspects of the west we have to be wary of, but it's in our best interest to learn what is good about the west.

roshan raz Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:24 AM

dress code is one of the reasons for this situation. parents are to be blamed.
death sentece should be implemented to curb these crimes.

    mick Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:27 AM

Definitly Parents should be blamed... i agree with the first comment made.

    SriLankan Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:42 AM

I wonder, as you say, these things happen in the west. Its rather because of lack of discipline in this country starting from the TOP than western influence or anything.

Roshan Khan Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:50 AM

Hanging will give him instant death, he wont suffer as the child, her parents and relative.

What we could be the best punishment for this crime ?

    Tintin Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:50 AM

Nothing anyone says here or does to this man can bring back the lost innocence of the child. However, if there are tougher laws, people would think twice before committing such heinous crimes

    Fishy Tuesday, 13 July 2010 09:18 AM

60 years old. Then she is not the first victim. Police should investigate further.

    Hash Tuesday, 13 July 2010 09:29 AM

The way things are going, I think Sri Lanka will be better of with Saudi laws implemented

    Priya Tuesday, 13 July 2010 09:31 AM

What has western culture got to do with this?
