The Police arrested 199 suspects during a major operation carried out in the Colombo, Colombo Central and Colombo North police divisions during the last few days.

The operation was carried out under the directions of the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) involving 220 policemen.

The police was able to arrest four men wanted in connection with a number of robberies, 59 for possessing ganja, heroin and kasippu, 16 men who were wanted on warrants and 12 main suspects wanted for a number of criminal activities reported from many parts of the island.

Police spokesman Maxi Proctor said that 21 motorbikes and trishaws which were parked in areas prohibited by the traffic police were also taken into police custody.

Last week in a similar operation carried out in Colombo, the police arrested 37 persons for driving after consuming alcohol.

The license of the persons was suspended for three months. SSP Maxi Proctor said that these raids were carried out to prevent road accidents mainly caused by drunk drivers.

The operation was carried out following two accidents which were reported in the Colombo area caused as a result of drunk drivers. (Supun Dias)
