BBS asks President to pardon Sigiriya girl

The Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) today requested President Maithripala Sirisena to pardon Uthayasiri who was jailed on charges of having scribbled on the Sigiriya mirror wall.

BBS General Secretary Galagodaahthe Ganansara Thera said the President could pardon the girl by using his presidential powers.

He said not only Sigiriya but other archaeological sites must also be protected.

The Thera said the current Government was trying to ignore the people’s problems by creating other issues such as the singing of the National Anthem.

Responding to a question he said not only General Sarath Fonseka but the other two commanders of the air force and navy have to be promoted to five-star rank because they were equally responsible for defeating the LTTE.

In a suggestion to prevent incidents like what happened at Sigiriya, BBS Executive Director Dilantha Withange said the Education Ministry has to develop the teaching of history as a subject by adding the importance of the archeological sites in Sri Lanka. The Government has to gazette archeological and sacred cities correctly.

Hindu Federation Leader N. Arunkanth said the language to be used when the National Anthem was not important. He said the National Anthem is a general thing and it is not an issue between the Sinhala and Tamil people and pardon the girl who was sentenced in the Sigiriya case.

BBS must be out of their mind be asking for pardon for the girl who vandalized Sigiriya. "He said not only Sigiriya but other archaeological sites must also be protected." How are we going to protect these places if we pardon the culprits. Please stay in temples and propagate real Buddhism rather than meddling in gov affairs.

It will be interesting to know if the BBS would have made this request if this girl was a Tamil or Muslim? Since this request has come from the BBS I think the President should NOT grant her clemency. But let the President should ask for any other credible organisation to make a fresh request and he should consider lessening the sentence to 3 months.
