The Government had decided to lift the ban imposed on transporting and selling wild boar and their meat, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture said.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, he said that a Cabinet Paper prepared by the Ministry would be submitted to the Cabinet next week.

Under the prevailing regulations, killing, transporting and selling of wild boars and their meat is prohibited, though the animals are killed secretly in rural areas when they trespass into the farming areas.

“Under the prevailing regulation wild boar population is rising rapidly in an unprecedented rate. Several farmer organizations had prevailed on the agricultural authorities to take measures to protect their crops from increasing boar menace,” he said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Good decision. Wild boars are a pest and becoming a huge problem in many areas. This should be allowed to bring down population to manageable proportions.

I thought taking a life was an akusal?

    Dave Friday, 21 September 2018 08:45 AM

No it's not! people use to kill these animals utterly savage techniques like "hakka patas" and those techniques will harm other wild life also. Instead of these kind of strategies relevant government authorities should be intervened for this matter.

Good Move. But tomorrow after reading in the news papers and after some calls received from the priest, it will be banned again. To hell with the crops or future of agriculture.

Most recently, H.E. said 35% of our farmer's crops are 'destroyed' by animals. While wondering as to from where he got this statistic, now our Field M's ministry wants to confirm it by culling these animals. Where are they going to sell the meat ? There will be dog meat in shops labeled as wild boar. Will the supermarkets accept this challenge? Next, venison !!

    Alex Friday, 21 September 2018 09:42 AM

You seem to have no brains. Wild boar meat can easily be distinguished from other meat (except that of porcupine). According to you,you never know what meat you buy when you go to the meat stall today.

    Summa Friday, 21 September 2018 10:59 AM

On the way to Katharagama, on road sides, there're many 'wild boar' sales on the sly and if you deep inside you'll find dog skeletons in the jungle .... I wonder where the brains are !!

It is a shocking decision by the Govt., only shows what pathetic leaders we have. Lifting of this ban will ensure many other animals are killed by hunters and the Police will turn a blind eye. Surely there will be many ways to control this population other than such drastic measures

    farmer Friday, 21 September 2018 05:53 AM

by introducing birth control pill i suppose

    ram Friday, 21 September 2018 08:23 AM

DJ why don't you reveal the way to control wildboar population.

Kingsley Wijesinhe Friday, 21 September 2018 08:27 AM

    "many other ways" such as?

    Sriyan Friday, 21 September 2018 08:51 AM

Can you suggest an other method to control?

    BuffaloaCitizen Friday, 21 September 2018 12:01 PM

Issue free condoms to the male wild boars.

Many of the villages in my area had no wild boar threat in the past ,yet due to the destruction done to the close by forests areas led these animals to come in to paddy fields and destroy the crops,We used to grow home grown vegetables like sweet potatoes .but due to these wild boars we are unable to grow those vegetables now.

Good idea, must be implemented with a close monitoring process with the involvement of PHIs to ensure that meat is fit for human consumption.

    Jaliya Friday, 21 September 2018 08:43 AM

98% Sri Lankan people and 100% politicians are mutts. Without any scientific data they will take the word of a farmer who is a complete lair. 98% of population in sri lanka lie as a habit ... it is necessary for the economic survival in this cesspool and has accepted by the cultural believes. As a recent example the bogus informative to the police department TID has changed his version of the complaint against DIG Nalaka .. RK did not remember who paid for the penthouse where he was living. Yesterday you kill the elephants by hire of reckless train drivers ... today allow the farmer to kill the wild boar ..tomorrow squeeze the living hell out of the citizens by de-valuating LKR. I may request the Oxford English dictionary to publish a new word invented by me identifying an uncivilized sri lankan " Negcrow "'

    BuffaloaCitizen Friday, 21 September 2018 12:03 PM

    Well said Jaliya

    CJ Friday, 21 September 2018 09:25 AM

Allowing for the humans to eat into leopards main meals is gonna be problematic.

    Gayan Friday, 21 September 2018 09:40 AM

    Yummy news.

Lord Wolfstein Friday, 21 September 2018 09:46 AM

Wild boar is a very tasty meat. Before supermarkets or stores sell this meat, it should be inspected and marked by a government veterinarian.

    sam Friday, 21 September 2018 12:17 PM

Yes when is it acceptable to kill millions of Chicken and Fish but not ok to kill a few pigs it can be considered as ignorant. Writing GOD bless BUDDHISM can also be seen as ignorance.

    Chari Friday, 21 September 2018 12:35 PM

This is a violation of the FFPO. Cannot sell the meat. Shame. DWLC can take action.
