The Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) is divided on the controversial bond issue, informed sources said yesterday.
"Some members hold a moderate view on the subject, others support the Central Bank Governor and yet others oppose him,” the sources said.
The sources said this would create a crisis within the committee.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is of the opinion that taking action against the Central Bank Governor is not within the scope of COPE, and that the purpose of COPE is to monitor and look into public enterprises.
JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed this view on behalf of his party and said they should not pass the buck to COPE as it was the duty of the President and the Prime Minister to take action regarding the Central Bank Governor. (Yohan Perera)

not really! though UNP has a sizeable number in the COPE it does not command 50% on its own.

Whether this is out of scope of COPE or not they are capable of making the decision so why back out? JVP is trying to protect it's image?

This issue will definitely be the end of this regime at the election in 2020.

This division exists all through our society. People are ready to support crooks and thieves as long as they are from their party.

Come on JVP, There has to be a ground, proof to sack someone. COPE report with substantial evidence is the basis for president to take action. Do not think a country president must take decisions on news paper headlines.

Spot on! This is exactly the problem with our society. They are blind to corruption, rape and murder if they happen within their political party. What is the message we are sending to the future generation? Until we, the people, have a backbone to change this unfortunate attitude, we, and the future generations, have to live with it.

Majority or minority in COPE is irrelevant. We want to know if allegations against Mahendran were proven true on the basis of the findings made by the investigation committee appointed by COPE

If Mahendran is indispensible why not appoint him as d Deputy PM via DM Android App

The problem is that there is no evidence of any wrong doing. Just unsubstantiated allegations. Instead of navel gazing at the mismanagement under the prior era they are crying wolf here. This saga should have been hosed and closed down long ago. Unfortunately a good man who sacrificed much to serve his country is left in the learch. Thanks to the vilification by an ignorant and self serving opportunistic few. He will be snapped up by some organisation that sees what he is capable of and the value he could add to it.
