Colombo, May 1 (Daily Mirror)- In what seemed like a long list of electoral pledges,  the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) came out with a set of promises at its May Day rally which they would implement if elected to office.

The pledges included full implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, a fresh probe on the Easter Sunday bomb attacks, creating smart farmers and fishermen, creating a conducive environment for investors, creating employment opportunities and creating Silicon Valley type IT zones in every district.

Other pledges included paying a higher interest rate for the deposits of senior citizens and creating smart schools.

There were no pledges or any proposals aimed at upholding labour rights in line with May Day.

“Some say that people in this country should not cling on to politics which are centered on promises as politicians in this country have failed to deliver what they have pledged over the years. However, failure to deliver promises is not an offence which the SJB has committed to date,” SJB leader Sajith Premadasa said at the party’s May Day rally.

“We will implement a policy of inclusiveness where the minorities are concerned. Accordingly, we will also put a stop to extremism. We will also conduct fresh probes on the Easter Sunday bomb attacks and bring those who are responsible to book. This will be done with the blessings of Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith,” he said.

Premadasa denied that some SJB MPs have obtained liquor licenses.

“No one in my party has obtained liquor licenses. However, I will cancel all liquor licenses through a resolution in Parliament when my government comes to power,” he added.

“No one in my party can be bought over by monetary rewards,” he said.

This is a person who has done a great service to the 'forgotten population' of the English speaking elite - 'the rural poor'. Without using any public finances they have donated over 150 smart class rooms, over 75 buses and provided urgently needed medical equipment to over 75 rural hospitals, while others who speak of the poor use their party funds to build offices, transport people to campaign meeting, and send their kids to international schools. Unfortunately for most anything Sajith does is seen in a negative scenario, when he play cricket, piano, guitar, or speak to kids, etc.etc. They don't care a damn about the hypocrisy of those who travel to capitalist countries requesting votes to form a socialist state. What the English speaking elite don't realise is that we are a country with 70% rural forgotten population and this man is serving that community.

So what's next - solve world poverty and global warming? Please don't allow him to become the president. He will be a laughing stock and a disaster for the country

Ane annichan Thursday, 02 May 2024 04:38 AM

Sajith forgot to mention making the world a peaceful and an really nice place where everyone will be happy.

Having seen this type of promises which never comes in to reality, the people are laughing at you and other others for these fake promises. Yeaster day the leader of 131 said that wages of estate worker will be raised to Rs 1700 and just after few hours estate owning companies declared that they are not in a position to fulfill the bogus promise made by the leader of 131 gang.

    Ram Thursday, 02 May 2024 06:05 AM

Sajith never had an opportunity to fulfil promises. If he wins by any outside chance I hope he will fulfil all the promises made

    ex-SJB Thursday, 02 May 2024 09:53 AM

This guy really takes the cake! He did nothing for the past 5 years as the opposition Leader about the Easter Sunday carnage and now wants to hang it as an electoral pledge? A man who has no control over the SJB is making pledges on how clean SJB people are going to be? Calling it `my party` is obviously being confused by his self obsessed megalomania and over estimation of his importance. Talk to Diana Gamage first before claiming the ownership of the SJB.

It is a very sad state of affairs but in Sri Lanka no one believes what a politician says because politicians have always been liars. They are only interested in making money and accumulating assets for themselves. Let the people go to hell is their moto ... Sri Lankans have always been foolish and naïve, and get caught to these master crooks.
