Excellent. Elections are very important for the democratic citizens to let out steam . This will result in calm and order.

Security Forces Must Stay Neutral Thursday, 09 May 2024 05:00 PM

Just hope no trickery will happen. Clean and fair elections needs to be upheld or the country’s recovery will be further complicated and compromised. Security forces have to ensure they don’t take sides. Law and Order and Rule of Law MUST PREVAIL.

Election dates in Sri Lanka are not fixed by the President or Election Commissioner but by a Sri Lankan/American duel Citizen so please wait till he decides the date.

People attacking RW, who managed to get us out of the economic crisis so soon, is silly and unwarranted. Each time he became Premier (thrice) he could not implement his program due to the powers wielded by the then President, who holds excessive powers in terms of our constitution. He became President in 2022 only due to the vacancy created by Gota leaving in a hurry giving the reins of governance to Ranil who was the Premier. During these last 2 years, all developments that has taken place is due to RW's planning and vision. There is no one to stop him now, but he works patiently getting the support of a Pohottowa Cabinet which threw him out in 2019. People should understand the ingenuity and resourcefulness RW has adopted with patience. Currently there is no one to match him.

Seems a very rational and non emotional comment. It s pity that Sri Lankans have short memories and quick to criticise and pull down. No wonder that tale about the unguarded prison cell of Sri Lankans. Yes, I agree that as a country we are in a far better place than a couple of years ago, and that it required strong and determined leadership, with many politically difficult decisions made, to get here.

“Presidential poll to be held between September 17, October 16”. Why is there such ambiguity? as a citizen of this country don’t I have the right to know for sure? The gov is playing with its citizens.

A presidential election will only derail the rapid development of the country thanks to our President Ranil and Hon. Basil Rajapaksa.

I genuinely don't understand and the article doesn't explain. Why doesn't the government declare a set election date early like in other countries?

Agreed and then get on with it, so much work ahead.

The incumbent President should resign and hand-over the reins of power to an impartial independent body to conduct a free poll where he also can tender his nomination if he wishes to, as an also-ran candidate with the blessings of the Pohottuwa party only to lose his deposit in a humilating style and then vanish from the local political scene to be bundled out to a foreign post.

SL needs to have a complete change in governance. The country’s economy is on a nosedive. Economic growth is very slow. Top 10% of people gobble up 42% of national income. Most of that 10% are batting for the current rulers due to their selfishness and unfairness, and the rest should understand this and vote accordingly.
