The completely wrong way to bring discipline to these cowards. Everyone volunteered for military service without being forced to do so. All deserters must be searched for with an arrest warrant. Military police must be deployed to hunt them down across the country. They then have to be locked up in an army labour camp for two years and work as chain gangs cleaning beaches, of course without pay. Pension rights must be canceled for all deserters.

Those who served longer and familiar with weaponry will be headhunted by mafia’s, politicians and rich businessmen. Smart fellas to get free training in the army and desert in time for a higher paying job. Hope the authorities will keep track on them to ensure they are law abiding.

My problem is why the authority of the government or high ranking Officers at forces why those people leave the service? It can be various reasons but most of the desters who leave of mistreatment of the high army officers.

These are young and energetic people, who know more than one trade, in addition to handling weapons. They have potential to earn money in a legal job in any foreign land, who pays them more for the same 24 hours a day. Anything wrong? If they indulge in illegal activities, those countries have rules to arrest and punish them. They bring us foreign exchange which our rulers swindle. rulers!

Who ever decided this for whatever reason; its wrong decision for certain. The Hallmark of tolerance for indiscipline is clear degradation of a society. Another very sad day for Sri Lanka.

Time for a major restructure of the services. Prioritize quality over quantity, lower the head count, increase entry requirements, provide comfortable pay and improve off duty/holiday rosters. It will be difficult to retain the newer generations otherwise.
