Sri Lanka has once again on Thursday abstained from voting on a resolution against Russia at the UN General Assembly, where the General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to call for a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine and for Russia to withdraw its forces immediately.
The resolution, which passed 141-7 with 32 abstentions on the day before the one-year mark of the Ukraine war, calls for Russia's "immediate cessation of the attacks on the critical infrastructure of Ukraine and any deliberate attacks on civilian objects, including those that are residences, schools and hospitals."
It also calls on nations and international organizations to redouble support for diplomatic efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
The seven countries who voted against it were Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua and Syria. Sri Lanka, India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan Iran and South Africa were among the 32 countries to abstain the vote.
A year ago also, Sri Lanka abstained in the UN General Assembly on a draft resolution calling for Russia to be held accountable for violations of international law by its invasion of Ukraine.(Sunil Jayasiri)

Russia already invaded sovereign Georgia and also Ukraine in 2014 by annexation of Cremea. Their request for joining the NATO is a respons to that. Now also Sweden and Finland want to join NATO against Russia. NATO never invaded another country. NATO is a defence ally. To defend the small European countries.

Russia has no better friend than us Lanka. We sell them tea produced in this Buddha blessed land infused with Buddhist merit at discounted prizes. We invite their citizens to visit and imbibe our Buddhist merit infused air. We allow them to view our Buddhist temples and pagodas and thus acquire great buddhist merit which they can take back to Russia and spread around.

I applaud SL for continue to take this position of neutrality. The conflict in Ukraine is essentially between Russia (supported by China, Iran and a few other nations) against the West (ie. the White countries). The outcome of that conflict doesn’t directly affect SL.

Sri Lankans are not a very conscious people at this point in its history. That is party of why country is in such a mess. People value revenge, stealing, scarcity mindset, shirking responsibility, blaming. So its not really a surprise to see them take no action against Russia, a very similar country by values....

Sri Lanka has no choice but to abstain from voting because we are only a little fry in the Indian ocean and are under obligation to Russia for their oil and export of our tea to that country. We are poor and virtually under obligation to the whole world and go around with a begging bowl asking for help.

Weighing up the pros and cons on the lives lost, is it beneficial to support Ukraine on a war to me, is a personal vendetta between Putin and Zalensky. Sri Lanka must remain neutral.
