Sri Lanka has been among the top 13 destinations and safest countries in the world to travel to, the Tourism Ministry said.

According to the worldpackers website, travelling should be enjoyable for everyone and should be relaxing and fun, not scary.

According to the website, the Ministry said with a large majority of the country's culture being Buddhist, this makes it a pretty safe place to travel as their mannerisms tend to be calm and welcoming.

Sri Lanka was ranked 12 among the safest countries to travel to. Accordingly, countries such as Iceland, Switzerland, Denmark, New Zealand, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Japan, Finland, Austria, Sri Lanka, and Rural UK were listed as the safest countries to travel to.

According to the Worldpackers Community's Ms. Lauren, it is glad to mention the best place to visit for tourism. "Sigiriya is a must-visit when travelling Sri Lanka-an enigmatic summit with the remains of an ancient palace at the top." Who wouldn't want to see that!," the website said.

"Overall, there are some incredible top destinations in Sri Lanka, but it's recommended to go off the beaten path and discover it for yourself," she added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

The only thing tourists have to worry about are the dirty politicians, like the tourism minister himself.

Ow how sweet. Remember Vidanapathirana and how he butchered Khuram Shaikh and raped his GF and it took almost one year to arrest him because he was under Royal family protection. Remember how Naomi Coleman from UK a dedicated Buddhist with a Tattoo of Lord Buddha on her hand was arrested, remanded and deported. And those countless white women who get intimidated by beach boys where the Police don't do anything.

No airport is operational in the North of the island, I found it unrelaxing and uncomfortable travelling by car or train for more than 6 hours from Colombo international airport to reach north.

    Mahila Friday, 21 October 2022 07:16 AM

Why struggling to get to that airport?? That airport – SL being so prosperous – is reserved for the “LTTE TERRORISTS AND DIASPORA RUMP ONLY”!!?? Don't use that airport by any chance? You’ll be AUTOMATICALLY CLASSIFIED AS THUS – even if you aren’t?? SL have IDEAL ‘TOPCLASS’ – HOME GROWN – RAIL TRANSPORT, which is perfectly designed with ‘EXEMPLARY TRACK AND ROLLING STOCK’, unavailable anywhere else in this world TO ROCK YOU INTO SLEEP @ 110 KMPH DURING JOURNEY – WONDERS, WHETHE TRAINS' GOING–OFF RAILS till Medawachchiya and thereon the “USELESS" INDIANS had made system, “WORSE” by removing well-designed SLR, sideways rocking motion!!?? ENJOY!!??

We also have a zoo in the middle of Diyawanna Oya, that also can be a tourist attraction

    Sokrates Thursday, 20 October 2022 03:18 PM

Nonsense. Safe it might have been during the Corona lockdowns. And what is the connection to Buddhism? All the criminal gang leaders who have been arrested or shot lately have been Buddhists. All the senior police and army officers who have recently ordered the beating of protesters are Buddhists.

Open up Jaffna international airport similar to BIA, the tourism will improve. Please close the white elephant in the south. It’s draining unnecessary foreign exchange.

anura hettiarachchi Thursday, 20 October 2022 03:50 PM

Its is safe for foreigners but citizens

    Mahila Friday, 21 October 2022 06:46 AM

You are mistaking the safety is provided because of US Dollars, they receive instead of Sri Lanka Rupees??!! This is the opportunistic culture they are adducing?? Even then, vulgarism in sexual remarks and Rape cannot be discounted?!!? IT'S RAMPANT IN THE “BACKWARD CULTURE” OR NON-CULTURE OF THE ISLAND, IF ONE TAKES THE ‘MACRO DEFINITION’ OF RAPE!!?? Non-Cultured, ‘MACABRE Culture’, ‘GROPING’ in Public Transport and Spaces!! That’s NOT Calm and welcoming!! One must be Messiahs’ "acolyte in crime" to call that, CALM, WELCOMING AND SAFE!! HOW COME? Must be to frolic in an UNKNOWNS’ bedroom IN A ‘ROADSIDE GUEST HOUSE’!!??

    Mohan Thursday, 20 October 2022 07:28 PM

Wow USA not even in the list lol Besides safe to travel, too safe that all Sri Lankans looking to get out

Well said tourist board Thursday, 20 October 2022 11:22 PM

It may be a safest country for the tourist board but world must be knowing the crisis situation prevailing here.

    Cheers Friday, 21 October 2022 12:18 AM

Thanks to our current Rajapakse government and our security forces who had paved the way. Minority and the diaspora including opposition wants carnage in the country. Government and forces should be strict not allowing public making unrest like violent aragalaya that was funded by ngo and Western countries who failed miserably

    Mandayan Friday, 21 October 2022 03:00 AM

I thought an international reputed organisation said it but it was the tourism minister himself. It’s not a news worthy article.

What a joke! Ms Fraser is on the run atm, just because she decided to comment and cover the local protests. Even people like us, ex pats will not go to srilanka considering the lack of human rights. It doesn’t matter your religion or your ethnicity, anyone who doesn’t have a political connection or a relative in politics has no human rights in Sri Lanka. Do not go spend your dollars and support a corrupt government that is treating general public like dirt!

No one is ever heard of social media website like 'worldpackers' .. ... it has no reputation. It clearly show their lack of knowledge on Sri Lanka by this misleading publication. Paradise for low budget backpacker's

    Terrence Friday, 21 October 2022 06:21 AM

Public show a lot of hospitality with a Smile but need to be careful of perverts and sex maniacs including some politicians as we have a few incidents of this nature where there is laxity by the arms of the law unlike in western countries where quick action is taken to apprehend the offenders

    Concerned Friday, 21 October 2022 06:57 AM

Let me tell a story ... and then let the tourist judge how safe it is to travel to Sri Lanka. " few months back I was at a destination near Colombo marine drive road, I had parked my vehicle and waiting for a person, a thrisaw came by and two Arab old gentlemen were trying to get out, the second person a disabled person with walking stick was helped out by the trishaw driver, while he was helping him out he took the cash from the top pocket of this elderly man without his knowledge. When I confronted this trishaw driver, he threatened me. I left the place without any heroics. Now tell me .... I have heard strioes that now with the economic crisis there are many such incidents for tourist. Over charging fares, meter manipulations, etc..

Such type of positive statements can only be regarded meaningfull or trustworthy, if these are reported by independent investigative sources who have no interest to benefit from it.

    Binura Friday, 21 October 2022 02:04 PM

There is Always bad things happening everywhere but when it comes to Sri Lanka we are safer than other countries

Dilshan Perera Friday, 21 October 2022 06:40 PM

UK and Austria made this list?? Must be a safe list for white men... Not non-whites in Hitlers birth place!
