A young man’s ear was cut off by another individual just because the victim was speaking on his mobile phone while crossing the road at Metigahatenna in Badulla yesterday, police said.
Police said the victim, who was a disabled man, was rushed to hospital after the suspect bit cut off his ear lobe in the middle of a pedestrian crossing just because the victim answered a call on his mobile phone.
Police said the suspect, in an act of rage had pulled out a knife and cut off the disabled man’s ear as he answered his phone and later assaulted him as he fell to the ground, much to the shock of other pedestrians on the road.
The Madolsima police said they are on the hunt for the suspect who fled the scene soon after the incident and further investigations are ongoing. (Nishantha Kumara)

Whatever happens is just bound to happen. Nobody can change it. We are just slaves of nature. Everything in this universe is bound to the law of cause and effect. That man's rage at that moment had its causes.

Is this the collapse of a too proud civilization we often read in comments? Does it mean that the so called proud civilization is not relevant any more, and are we back to jungle rule? Politicians of all sides should be very proud for this achievement.

It is very distressing when people use the phone not caring about other road users. I have seen this happening not only whilst walking but whilst driving and they become a nuisance to other road users since those using mobiles care a damn about other road users and they become an obstacle as it is of utmost importance that one concentrates whilst driving or walking because a nano second is enough to cause an accident. Whilst there is a law that no one can use their mobiles whilst driving which is not enforced by the guardians of the law who turn a blind eye similarly the law should strictly enforce regarding pedestrians using their mobiles on public roads where there could be a disaster. Pedestrian crossings have been earmarked for the protection of pedestrians who should also reciprocate by ensuring that when using the pedestrian crossings it should be brisk, allowance to old and not be an obstacle to the many vehicles waiting for their turn to ensure the smooth passage of traffic
