President Gotabaya Rajapaksa expressed his apology to former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the All Party Conference over the remarks made by Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal in which he accused the former government for the present crisis.
In his speech at the conference, Cabraal has briefed the Sri Lanka’s current economic situation and had palmed the blame on the former Government for the prevailing crisis.
Responding to the remarks, UNP Leader Wickremesinghe expressed his displeasure and slammed Cabraal for making such a statement.
“This conference was convened by you (President Gotabaya) at the request made by the SLFP. I made my appearance upon a request made by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva who insisted me to attend the conference because of the old friendship,” he said.
“Accordingly, we are here to discuss the present crisis and propose solutions to overcome the challenges. However, this is not a time to play the blame game,” he added.
Former Prime Minister proceeded to say that he regretted to see that the Central Bank Governor had started his speech by saying that “the present crisis is due to the shortcomings of the former Government.”
“If we are to drag this issue, it will end in the era of King Vijaya,” Mr. Wickremesinghe added.
Subsequently, President Gotabaya apologized to Mr. Wickremesinghe saying that “my apology if you are hurt.” (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Actually, the crisis started from 1977 onwards when JR of UNP created an import based economy. JR also contributed to the LTTE war which lasted for 30 years. Then we had Rajapakshas who spent money on some projects which were not economically useful. They also spent on lavish items. Then we had massive corruption from JR times. Then our governance community multiplied so our expenses multiplied along with corruption at all levels. Tgen we had easter Sunday attacks and Covid that impacted all our earning streams. On top of all these , we are a lazy bunch of people with not much creativity as well. So blaming one or two guys will not solve the crisis. We are all responsible. Now ,no one can take any corrective action as there will be strikes and protests for everything. So we are basically doomed now. What ever you say will not matter anymore.

You are spot on. Imagine if the west did not rule us where SL will be now. I can confidently say we would not have progressed this far. The progress SL made since independence speaks for itself. From one of the top 3 countires in Asia to almost to bottom 3 countries. Still we are unashamed. By overly emphasising on Sinhala language the politicians, for their own political gains, kept the masses in the dark from learning about the progresses in the outside world. It did not help the masses develop their intellect.

Everyone closely following self-created economic pandemic in this country and this conference. Nothing came out of the conference it is BS. I am happy to see that RW came prepared (not a fan of RW either). Importantly GR never properly apologized, only justified! This is not what we need! a proper and a honest dialogue between ranking officials to come out of the economic mess. We are at the door steps of hyper inflation!

You are absolutely correct. I wouldn't consider it an apology but rather an explanation. GR should have admonished Cabraal. Any way I feel this APC is another trick to hoodwink the public and ultimately pass the blame on to someone else to help secure the next election. I believe that the vast majority of people are intellectually immature to avoid making the same mistake repeatedly.
