Pastor Jerome Fernando, who is facing a CID investigation over his hate comments against Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism, will be arrested upon his arrival at the BIA as there is a travel ban issued against him by the Colombo Fort Magistrate, Police Spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.

SSP Thalduwa said that the CID had received several complaints against Jerome Fernando and the CID had begun an investigation against him on Tuesday. The CID has also obtained a travel ban from the Fort Magistrate Court on the same day. "However he left the country on Sunday," SSP Thalduwa said.

"Whenever the court issues a travel ban against an individual, he cannot leave the country or if he is overseas, he can be arrested upon his arrival," the Police Spokesperson said. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

Beyond belief to arrest someone for being overseas when travel ban put in place Wednesday, 17 May 2023 01:53 PM

The man was already overseas, already on a pre-planned tour when the travel ban was put in place for him to travel overseas. To arrest him for already being overseas when it was only afterwards he was banned is farcical. Utterly preposterous legal system. No wonder this country will never get back up like when the British were controlling the affairs here.

His vituperative speech is very damaging, already the country is on fire. Sepala was imprisoned for a much smaller vituperative talk. This man's punishment should be more lengthy. Then his God can miraculously free him through the prison roof.

This is how a martyr is created. This fuss initiated by some short-sighted individuals, in which even the President got involved, made the "Prophet" and his Glorious Church well known. A well planned advertising campaign that saved the "prophet" a lot of money. To be mentioned several times in the top news every day requires a top advertising strategy. And the simple-minded people (including the DM editors) don't notice that the Glorious Church's plan worked. The next step to martyrdom will be if upon his return he is arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act and thrown into prison. His followers will grow immeasurably, as will the donations he gets.

Daya alwis Wednesday, 17 May 2023 02:53 PM

I think what happens now is that since there is a travel ban Police will have to arrest him upon arrival and produce him in courts. This is the procedure .

Where have we heard these fairytales before? This is definitely a country like no other, that's for sure.

Who are we fooling? Wednesday, 17 May 2023 04:15 PM

Let's be honest here. The reports keep saying "Buddhism, Islam, and Hinduism" again and again. No one would have given crap if he said anything about Islam or Hinduism. It would have even been praised as seen in the past. Being disingenuous by lumping it all together.

Put him behind bars, Buddhism has survived in Srilanka over 2500 years , according Lord Buddha's Buddhism will survive for 5000 years as a respect to Lord Buddh protecting Buddhism is our topmost priority

    Ranil Wednesday, 17 May 2023 09:18 PM

@Ranjith If Buddhism was followed to the latter of Lord Buddha's teachings and wisdom, then would we end up as a bankrupt country?

Be at peace everyone. This is drama. Focus on your own life; your next bill, your next meal, child's school fees, your medicine, your visa, migration blocks, your health issues, demonic attacks, etc. Who will help you with all that? Do your own research before reacting.

There were so many worse crooks that could have been arrested upon arrival In past but was welcomed. What a country we live.

    Ranjith Wednesday, 17 May 2023 06:40 PM

The people are waiting patiently to know the government is protecting Buddhism according to the constitution, Buddhism is under threat due to these pastors due to their actions to convert Buddhist and also criticising Buddhism this has been going on for sometime this pastor is very close to Mahinda and his wife so nothing will happen to the pastor and he will destroy Buddhism in srilanka but Buddhism will exist for another centuries.

Arresting him when he comes back when travel ban was imposed after he left is a joke but that's the law. So he should be arrested. Anyway jerome broke his own rules by critiquing other religion. He came soo far by using under the rader strategy. Maybe he thought now he's Big shot cause there's many big shot backing him. His right hand man supports major opposition also. So they're quite, major family also quite cause they follow him. End of the day he's businessmen and what he did was wrong. Funny thing there're soo many others who has done the same but wasn't treated the same way as jerome getting treated now.

Was Buddha a Siinhalese? The Buddha rejected luxuries, are Buddhist leaders actually following Buddha's teachings? Or are they enjoying luxuries with other peoples money similar to leeches of Diyawannawa?

Laksiri JP Wednesday, 17 May 2023 08:24 PM

All religions are abused to cover poliical and financial crimes and corruption. Never endinging organized cunning showing strong faith only for publicity in the political scene. False prophets and criminals who fight against them when the country under a dark cloud; ,ending desperation.

It was a big mistake when Sri Sanghamitra introduced these Sinhalese to Buddhism. Because in actuality they shud have been Muslims, fanatical about everything and proving violent solutions to problems... exactly opposite to the true teachings of Buddhism

I wish the government cared about the people who are starving without food all over the country instead. Or take action against all the rapes and murders that are on the rise. This country has devolved

Don’t worry, He will use his almighty mystical powers he has to get drop the charges and not be arrested instantly. Then he will get more and more followers. This will make his critics lick their wounds. !!!!!!
