The Gazette notification restricting the imports of 367 non-essential items without a valid licence has been issued, with effect from midnight today, the Department of Imports and Exports Control said.

Fish fillets and other fish meat, Milk and cream, buttermilk, curdled milk and cream, yogurt, butter and other fats and oils derived from milk; dairy spreads, cheese and curd, grapes, fresh or dried, apples, pears and chocolate, are some of the products of which imports have been restricted.

The Regulation is only be applicable to the importation of goods, which have the date of Bill of Lading/ Air Waybill on or after March 10, 2022.

Any importers, who intend to import any goods specified in the Gazette, are entitled to have a valid license issued by the Controller General of Imports and Exports Control prior to the date of Bill of Landing: Airway Bill of such importation.

The Gazette notification has been issued in such a situation where multiple parties have slammed the Government for not prioritizing the imports of essential goods, which has eventually led to a shortage of such goods.

List of 367 non-essential goods is as follows, (Sheain Fernandopulle)

    Nadaal Wednesday, 09 March 2022 06:11 PM

More restrictions and more bottle necks we will have more black markets. Like rice, sugar, tiles etc. If prices are to come down v need to create competition and increasing availability. Fr that v need dollars so if v want all our expatriates to deposit their salaries via banks give them more incentives. Duty free allowances and undial rates. The 5 to 6 billion will start flowing then.

They are just imposing a levy and only letting companies with the license to import them. In other words, Friends of the Family will be allowed to make more profit and the public will have to pay a premium

This happens only in dictatorships and bankrupt countries. Humans are no cattle and they like variety.

What a joke? Whats the point of stopping canned fish, when these corrupt politicians keep it open for them to import super luxury motor cars? Are they considered essential? May be the president thinks so, so that he could use them to bribe these good for nothing baskets, begging for their vote. Time this country was changed to a military regime and get rid of these vagabonds that become corrupt rich after getting vited to the cattle shed. Baskets!

Do you think these politicians are going to eat Dhal, polsambole and rice. They restrict the public from such items but they enjoy the very best. In the future we could expect a well under nourished population. The tourist will have to eat the same. We have gone back to the 70's because of top governance by our politicians. Kaputas are ruling this country.

    Weerasinghe Wednesday, 09 March 2022 08:21 PM

Should have been done from the beginning in the 50s. Our opening the economy like flood gates was one of the most foolish things to have been done by a government. We wasted all our foreign earnings for mundane things. If restriction were there, local products and production would have developed to a great extent.

Gamarala Sepala Wednesday, 09 March 2022 08:50 PM

This should have done earlier. We understand there is a global pandemic and issues are all over the world. But we cannot live without power and fuel but can live without grapes and imported chocolate.

All these items will arrive in the country through illegal means. Small boats bring in all these items smuggled from passing ships. Angulana is famous for these activities.

Restricted means that these will be available in less quantity and at higher price.

    Ravi Thursday, 10 March 2022 08:54 AM

    Too late. Too little.

Who's fault is this? Thursday, 10 March 2022 09:38 AM

Ha Ha how can anyone stop these items coming into Sri Lanka? From Galle to Puttalam, there are unofficial mini ports run by smugglers. They give light signals at night, to dingy boat operators who have connections with shipping crews. If you walk on the Galle road, foreign items like mini kettles to large gas cookers are available on the pavement.
