The Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Public Security Ministry Secretary were summoned by the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (SLHRC) to inquire into possible violations of human rights following the arbitrary actions by policemen these days.

While issuing a media announcement, the SLHRC said they had observed the illegal activities the policemen are in involved, concurrently violating human rights.

They said the situation poses a serious threat to the life of a democratic society and the rule of law in the country.

This is the opinion of the Human Rights Commission. Therefore, the SLHRC has requested that the IGP and Public Security Ministry Secretary to appear before the SLHRC on Monday, November (21) at 10.00 am.

They also said these kind of activities cannot be condoned from a defence body bound to protect the law and order of the country.

During the discussion, it has also been decided to advise the parties on the actions that they should take to prevent human rights violations in the future. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (SLHRC) is an venomless snake. In order for Sri Lanka, specially the police and the military to be brought to follow human rights norms, it is time international sanctions are applied. Stop all aid and trade with Sri Lanka until human rights are followed.

Despite the concern expressed by the HRCSL the police seem to continue with their campaign regardless !

All these morons in govt. and oppo. polity system cannot rule the country. They all are friends. Thugs and thieves in power have to be sent into jail first. Police do this under their directions. SL is no longer a democratic country.

The Police have become a law unto themselves and have taken the law into their own hands, to such a morbid extent that people are not even free to walk our streets without being assaulted by the Police and arbitrarily arrested. Not only the HRC but the international community should stand up against these heinous actions.

Outstation traffic policemen are harassing people too unnecessarily. Specially alone Galle road in areas like Matara. Specially lady drivers and foreign ladies are harassed by some officers. Also wasting public resources. About 2 to 3 police officers can be seen just after every bend with double lines. Cameras can be fixed if these are dangerous places and send the fine to homes with a photo evidence. These police officers should be deployed to work on more serious issues like crime etc. Also it is high time to make it compulsory to have a head cam when ever a police get involved in a case.

Do you think that this donkey will understand what is being told? What makes the SLHC think that this political puppet will listen and adhere to these warning as long as he can lick their boots and gain his fringe benefits and leave as a diplomat to a foreign mission after his retirement?

The most useless Police service in the world!. SL police; you'd better look at how Australian Police are handling the cricketer's case. Learn from them. No interference from politicians, no favours, no excuses. Australian court system is the same. Top class judges. No jokers. SL will never get to that state ever.

starting from the IGP downwards, many should be indicted for dereliction of duty...

    Roshanaly Tuesday, 15 November 2022 01:40 PM

Just waste of time, nothing happened in the many previous inquiries.

    Nm Tuesday, 15 November 2022 01:44 PM

Commissioner for HR in SL should know better than showing off her importance like a peacock by summoning busy officials on trivial matters.
