President Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that the government is seeking the possibility of introducing non-paying wards in private hospitals where the government is taking the tab for the treatments made in those non-paying wards, the President's Media Division (PMD) said.
The President also said the government was considering to introduce paying wards in Government hospitals as well.
He said it is discussed to introduce a health insurance scheme where the government can assist those in the lower income category, when they need to get the service of growing private hospitals.
He made these observation addressing at the inauguration ceremony of the 6th annual academic sessions of the Sri Lanka College of Military Medicine (SLCOMM) under the theme of ‘Resilience of Military Medicine in the Times of Crisis’ held at the Eagle's Lagoon in Katunayake.
The President said opening a new chapter in military medicine, a separate unit would be established to send military personnel overseas to help out at the times of health disasters.
He also said that the government had sent a group of military personnel to Nepal.
They were sent at the times of natural disasters. "But I'm looking at the possibility of using our military medical personnel to be sent abroad when the people are faced with health disasters," the President said.
"Health disasters take place more often than natural disasters and I would discuss this matter with the military to establish such unit. So that is opening of a new chapter in military medicine.’
The President also said that under the Indian credit line, the government is to get more medicines to address the shortage of medicinal drugs during this crisis situation.
He added by now, the government is working on making more foreign exchange available to the medical sector. He said further that discussions are in progress with the Ministry of Health to upgrade the Medical Research Institute (MRI) into one of the best research laboratories in the region. All what doctors do is to prescribe medicines and drugs produced by pharmaceutical companies which also informs the doctors on how and when to prescribe them. Thinking it practically a nurse could do all the jobs done by doctors. As a first step open up the clinical medicine and allow others to do the job of caring for the patients. The importance of doctors is artificial, their knowledge of science of human health is next to zero. This is why in this modern times we have a pandemic and millions of people have died worldwide but still the doctors don’t have a clue about it. We have to shut down all private hospitals and train ordinary people in the task of looking after human health , it is ludicrous to keep thinking the doctors as “ medical experts “.

No wonder, IMF Loan is delayed??? Attitude to close all private hospitals or virtually "turning the idea over to take over private health institutions" is the main reason of our being stuck in the backwaters for so long!! NO FDI in futre!!! Not China or any others not restructuring, but the question of long term, if not permanent, inability to service LOANS ALREADY TO BE REPAID!!??

This is another step to systematically weaken and dissolve the state sector free of charges health facility . The measure sets a precedent that private hospitals already started free of charge health facility so who is opopposed to do the other way round !

Why not have more paying beds in Public hospitals that will give an income to the government
Fred Sunday, 26 February 2023 03:23 AM
Not a good idea.Private hospitals are all about profit. In public hospitals it is about providing a service to the community. Can't mix the two.And doesn't address the current issue-shortage of doctors medical supplies.Where are the apothecaries? In the good old days they provided a valuable service in the provinces

The citizens should serve the politicians and not complain. It is an honour to serve people of high esteem.
