Necessary arrangements have been made to hand over the vehicles confiscated by Sri Lanka Customs (SLC) to be used for raids by the Sri Lanka Police Department, including drug prevention, State Finance Minister Ranjith Siambalapitiya said.

He said this while participating in an inspection visit on Monday (20) at the Hambantota port premises to monitor the relevant vehicles currently parked at the port.

He mentioned that some vehicles confiscated due to illegal importation have been at the port for about seven years.

"On the instructions of President Ranil Wickramasinghe, the ministry is looking forward to removing the existing legal obstacles regarding those vehicles and using them for the welfare of the people," the Minister said.

"We know that there are media reports that drug trafficking is spreading rapidly. The police department has about 12,000 vehicles for each of these raids. About half of them are older than 20 years.

"These vehicles are not enough for 600 police stations around the country and 111 police stations that are newly established," he said.

As a result, these vehicles are provided in response to request by the police, the minister added. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Day light robbers, normal SL mentality. Stealing from the people to give to corrupt police to sell more drugs to children.

It's a crime to keep these vehicles rotting in the sun and rain. Rather, they can recover the taxes and release them with a penalty. The government can earn some revenue. Giving to the Police will be a waste of money as they don't maintain the vehicles. After few months/years all will come to the auctions.

Some appear to be in good condition, some not. It could be white elephants for the Police to get them going

So about 20 vehicles each for the existing 600 stations is not enough? Why not re export them for some forex or is this gift to police a thanks for blindly serving their masters?

Why keep confiscated vehicle so long in the port, this may be letharg and lack of coordination among departments, at least now firm decisions are made, there are number of vehicles in court premises pending conclusion of cases, some quick action should be taken to release these vehicles to be used for useful purposes.

Fuel cost would be too high to sustain by the police department. As Fuel cost and vehicle maintenance costs not budgeted. There again vehicles will rot on the roads.

what a waste of money when the country is in such dire need of money. Govt. could have earned some money by selling it in the free market rather than giving it to the police

More than gifting everything to Police, more important is to make Police professional, competent and disciplined. It is no use giving anything to a raw monkey, because he will continue to abuse not understand the purpose.

I see lot's of 'white vans!'

    Hawkeye Thursday, 22 December 2022 11:54 AM

Presumably, with a great number of white vans we should expect disappearance of anti-Government persons to increase too!!

This is the another way they can keep the police in their pockets. Why not auction them and and use that income towards some urgent needs for the poor? It seems there is a great number of vehicles and the money raised from an auction can be easily put to better use.
