One of the batches of the drug used in the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital that resulted in the demise of a 21-year-old girl has been withheld following two more cases of severe allergic reactions reported from the Kandy Hospital, a Health Ministry official said.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Additional Secretary to the Health Ministry Dr. Saman Rathnayake said, "Two more cases of severe allergic reactions (Anaphylactic shock) were reported today at the Kandy Hospital from a different batch of the same drug 'Ceftriaxone' used in the Peradeniya Hospital.

"There were 10 batches of Ceftriaxone. The incident involving the death of the 21-year-old girl has been caused due to a different batch, while the two cases of severe allergic reactions at the Kandy Hospital have been caused by a different batch of the same drug," Dr. Rathnayake underscored.

"Accordingly, the batch used in the Kandy Hospital has been withheld," he added.

However, no decision has been taken to withdraw or withhold the batch used in the Peradeniya Hospital that resulted in the death of the 21-year-old girl, according to Peradeniya Teaching Hospital Director Arjuna Thilakarathna.

Earlier, Dr Thilakarathna told Daily Mirror that the drug was used even after the demise of the 21-year-old girl and even today.

Chamodi Sandeepani Jayaratne (21) who was admitted to the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital on Wednesday (12) to obtain treatment for a stomach ailment died due to anaphylactic shock after being administered Ceftriaxone via a cannula.

Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic in the form of an injection used to treat many kinds of bacterial infections. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

After Kany hospital reporting two more cases of severe drug reaction proves that the 21 year girl at Peradeniya died of severe drug reaction. Health hierarchy should not issue statements to nullify the drug reaction, allergy tests should be done prior to administration of injections. Life is precious, no compensation will wipe the heart aches of the family nor it will bring back the life of the dead lady at this prime age.

If someone can help to inform the public information sources of supply, name of the supplier, registered as a supplier with National drugs regulatory authority, how long registered as a supplier, other medications same supplier supply, name of the local agent .

Your country people have no remorse nor shame. All they do is blame the dead whom they kill due to negligence and then cover up everything. Your country is well known for that internationally. Such a statement by this so called doctor is definitely influenced by the minister to protect his portfolio.

Why aren't allergy tests done before administering the drug. Isn't it standard medical practice?

What's going on? If the Minister of Health is not resigning the President should take stern action and sack him. No where in the world will remain a minister who has done this much of damage to the health sector and he is killing innocent patients. Really pathetic situation

U have misunderstood, not the doctor. He saud out of those serious allergic reactions (anaphylactic shock) 1% die generally, not 1% those who receive medication die. This is what happens with most of the people who have commented here. Knowing half is more dangerous than knowing nothing because such people get together and spread wrong messages which they think are true. Know ur potential before u challenge doctors

Jnagama Man! You are absolutely correct. We have become a set of Sissies or correctly known as Ponnayos. We see the word circus of minister and the doctors who try to find new words for blunder. We are in an attempt to save politicians and doctors who care a damn about our lives. Has any of these fellows tendered an apology or letter of resignation? They will never do it!

Older doctors are more corrupt, who wants doctors who lied for decades Sunday, 16 July 2023 05:54 PM

When there is young new doctor, and old doctor worked 20 years who is more likely to have lied more. Always cover up doing older doctor. Ranil letting older doctors continue their corrupt practices, as he knows they will do more deceit and lies for the government. Doctor over 60 years old are most likely to deceive, so government want more of such crooks

It is unfortunate that people do not appreciate the actions of the Minister of Health. He is trying to reduce the population of Sri Lanka by importing low-quality drugs from black-listed pharmaceutical companies and receiving commissions that will help Sri Lanka's economy.

    Nimal Sunday, 16 July 2023 12:07 PM

Why don't they discard all these low-quality drugs right-away? If they do so, they can bring some more of this stuff and collect hefty commissions.

    GHT Sunday, 16 July 2023 12:58 PM

Stop buying Indian drugs as well as cut ties with India immediately in trading deals of anything that does claim the lives of many in Sri Lanka in the recent past.

Dr. K.W. Ananda Wickramasooriya Monday, 17 July 2023 07:42 AM

In conclusion, whatever tests made it is clear that Inferior quality cheap drugs been brought from India and all-important fact is Health Minister had filled his pocket with huge commissions.

So many patients are subjected to face deaths due to the poor administration of Health Department and from the Health Minister to the bottom all are not capable of handling the ministry - they should get out soon..
