A 57-year-old man died after he developed an allergic reaction at the Teaching Hospital Kegalle following the administration of the antibiotic used in the Peradeniya Hospital which resulted in the death of a 21-year-old girl.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Hospital Director Dr. Mihiri Priyangani said the person was admitted to the hospital due to abdominal distension and fever on July 10 where he had been administered 14 separate doses of the antibiotic, Ceftriaxone.

“However, he had developed an allergic reaction on July 17 due to the antibiotic and was transferred to the ICU as he was suffering from other chronic diseases as well. The patient died the following day (18),” Dr. Priyangani said.

“Since the patient was suffering from other chronic diseases, the cause of death cannot be directly attributed to the allergic reaction. Nevertheless, the doctors suspect that the allergic reaction could have been a contributing effect to the death,” she added.

Therefore, investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of death.

There are a number of unregulated generic drugs manufactured in India and elsewhere and our health sector to be highly vigilant in importing such drugs into SL markets. Patients health must be a number 1 priority above profit or cost

Health Ministry is under fire. Patients diying is news for the public, but affects the entire family of the victims forever, families have lost breadwinners, sisters, daughters, none could compensate the bereaved families. Dear Health Minister, please airfreight ceftriaxone from western suppliers to overcome this.crisis. Every minute is precious, life are being lost. (Tenders are awarded to the quotation that offers the lowest price that meets the composition of the drug) but country and it's citizens in danger, wave off procedures, order emergency purchase of this drug from Western suppliers on priority basis.

It is hightime that Keheliya is taken to task along with his bunch of thieves who have minted money out of drug purchases.

Attorney General Should Order The Police To Arrest The Doctors Thursday, 20 July 2023 05:17 PM

When the 21 year old girl died at the hospital few days back after being administered with INDIAN MADE ANTIBIOTICS, the doctors immediately said that it was the girl’s allergic conditions and not the medicine that killed her. Now a second person has died within few days at the same hospital after being administered with the same antibiotics, so it is clear now it has nothing to do with individual allergies but it is the the INDIAN MADE ANTIBIOTICS that has killed both of them. Because all these doctors make frequent trips to India to be bribed in thousands by the Indian drug makers , the doctors would keep defending the Indian medicine irrespective of the fact the people dying in hospitals .

    Martin Thursday, 20 July 2023 05:51 PM

If a tender is offered to the lowest price bidder and if they cannot fulfill the orders, you can then purchase it from somewhere else and charge a higher penalty to the initial bidder. This is the standard procedure in Germany and other Western world

There is some bastard or bitch working for India in the Daily Mirror. In this present climate if the traitor is identified , that would be the end.

It is usua practice even in the Western world to get various discounts and rebates in selling pharmaceuticals drugs and normally these are passed back to government. Not sure what the practice in SL? Deep into the pock of the health minister?

    Terrence K Thursday, 20 July 2023 06:46 PM

What is the Minister of Allergics telling Now? Maybe as mentioned by him there are many Undertakers and if people don't die they will go out of business !!!!!!!!!

    Profits Thursday, 20 July 2023 06:58 PM

Pharmaceutical companies’ are earning enormous profits by importing inferior quality drugs to the country. The top management and executives of these companies are living in the lap of luxury on these profits. The poor masses are dying like flies, at the drop of a hat. What a state of affairs!!

When Kehaliya went to India to purchase drugs NPP and other Trade Unions alarmed the Govt. Now we reap the outcome of his journey

Sisil Sudesh Thursday, 20 July 2023 10:13 PM

Does not appear to be an allergic reaction because the patient is said to have taken 16 doses before he got the fatal injection. Usually allergies develop very fast, say by the first or second dose.

    Nihal S Friday, 21 July 2023 01:53 AM

These are Keheliya imports from India - he should be sacked. President why are you keeping eyes closed?

    RP Friday, 21 July 2023 02:17 AM

Luckily Keheliya lives in SL and part of the Idiot comprised Cabinet. Had he was living in the western countries, his head would have rolled long time ago. Going for cheap non-regulated manufacturers and generic brands and then has the audacity to attack his critics?. What is the RW doing? Pondering the future Presidential elections? Please do something and get this Rambukwella out, so people will not die in vain and warn Ministers to do their work diligently!

Dying Patient Friday, 21 July 2023 07:23 AM

People must appreciate the actions of the Minister of Health. Firstly, he buys low-quality drugs for commissions which will help the financial situation in Sri Lanka. Secondly, these low-quality drugs lead to the death of patients reducing the population of this overpopulated country.

Doctors! Please go away. Friday, 21 July 2023 08:03 AM

You doctors are like the none wise men of Gotham seated on the rock, who keep passing judgement on every dead person passing their way. We have had enough of your wise opinions. Please get down to work or leave your jobs. At least the money and probably some lives can be saved.

    Das Friday, 21 July 2023 08:46 AM

Who ever made money from supplying inferior quality drugs may think to give luxury to their children

Karalasingam Sivalingam Friday, 21 July 2023 09:34 AM

State Pharmaceutical Corporation is the importer of drugs on behalf of the government hospitals via tender board procedures, price and quality determined by SPC,government hospitals use the drugs imported by by SPC, therefore the responsibility lies with SPC as well for inferior quality drugs.
