The investigation into the death of businessman Dinesh Schaffter, who died mysteriously, has now taken a new turn following the recovery of several evidences with investigators now suspecting that he may have committed suicide.

This development reportedly developed when investigators found a piece of wire in his home similar to the wire tied around Schaffter's neck at the time of his death. Also, some cable ties similar to ones used to tie Schaffter’s hands were found in his house.

In the middle of the investigation, the investigating officers suspects whether Schaffter committed suicide, but according to the autopsy on Schaffter’s death revealed that businessman died as a result of strangulation with a zip-wire cable.

In the meantime, investigators have focused on letters that Schaffter allegedly wrote few days ago before the incident to his mother-in-law and it is said that it contains emotional comments.

The letter he sent to his mother-in-law that says “Thank you very much for raising such a good daughter”.

Also, the investigations revealed that, Schaffter had advertised in a newspaper to sell his house at Flower Road, in which he had lived.

Meanwhile, it was reported that Shafter had suffered multiple losses after investing millions of rupees in various business ventures after failing to recover money.

Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that investigations have not ruled out whether it was a murder or suicide and that the CID is investigating the incident on each angle.

Also, he said Police have so far recorded statements from more than 70 persons including family members. Dinesh Schaffter’s wife, two brothers and a sister were among those questioned. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

Puzzling suspicion!! Given that Dinesh was strangled AND his hands were tied as well acording to news reports. Wonder how he managed to do both himself, IF it was suicide. Unprecedented feat!!

Did he have life insurance his family can benefit from Tuesday, 27 December 2022 08:45 AM

Did you have an life insurance policy, as often known in West that those who have great losses, can't repay loan, would commit suicide to get insurance payout for their dependents. In this case the deceased didn't have children.

Keep digging Tuesday, 27 December 2022 05:16 PM

This was my thought too. He has three children. Insurance in the west does not pay out for suicide. They do if it is a murder, though.

    Anura Tuesday, 27 December 2022 08:48 AM

The cricket commentator Brian Thomas is the one involved with millions of rupees owing to the diseased. He is then an obvious suspect but the police has not picked him up.

Tilting at Windmills Tuesday, 27 December 2022 07:25 PM

Come on there is so much evidence, the deceased had a sorry mental state. He even wanted to sell his own house. The zip ties found in his house. The same wire found in his house. Either family member involved or he is shameful. Either way, there is no good after life for those who commit suicide. Even creature in the jungle do not do it, only humans do it out of choice.

    Diane Tuesday, 27 December 2022 08:48 AM

The whole country already knew that the end report would be "he committed suicide"! Did those other murder victims Thajudeen, Lasantha, Ekneligoda, to name a few, did they also commit suicide?? Shame on you CID!!

Nihal Wijethunga Tuesday, 27 December 2022 09:00 AM

Why should someone about to commit suicide buy shorteats and also tie his own hands with cable ties. The truth is that some powerful person is behind this and the this lie is the only way the police have of saving him.

    Era Tuesday, 27 December 2022 09:24 AM

Very unlikely situation as his share in listed companies are worth multi billions.

    affan_yusuf@hotmail.com Tuesday, 27 December 2022 09:25 AM

It is indeed a new turn. Police would have found out how a man could kill himself while his hands are being tied. They would have also found that he is going to take the proceed of the sale of his house after his death. Instead of taking extra sleeping pills, they would have found out, blood soaking injuries would be a more peaceful choice for someone to die. Pure bull sh*t..

    Joker Tuesday, 27 December 2022 10:49 AM

And the winner for the joke of the year goes to..

Mohamed Adham Tuesday, 27 December 2022 12:28 PM

I am sure that even the great Sherlock holmes if he rises up from his grave, would NEVER be able to solve this murder. our top class police almost declares that the victim TIED HIS OWN HANDS WITH A CABLE TIE, AND THEN EVEN STRANGLED HIMSELF !!!!! Scotland Yard and even the FBI would have to bring over the wonderful smart detective of the SL Police who came to this conclusion. Now that a SUICIDE narrative has been introduced. Surely this would be the final RESULT in this case. CASE CLOSED.

    wsw Tuesday, 27 December 2022 12:29 PM

Well done CID, case closed !!

    Farook Tuesday, 27 December 2022 12:38 PM

Money thrown to close. Multi billionaire lost a few hundred million and kills himself by buying 2 short eat packets, ties and strangles himself, sends message to BT in Bad English, gets someone to exit taking the short eats. Cable ties found? At his level he going to a shop to buy cables?. Stinking story that has been closed at any cost.

Jagath Alvis Tuesday, 27 December 2022 01:44 PM

Do they actually think we are idiots? He hands were tied around the car seat and neck was strapped with a zip-wire cable? If they found similar cables at home, they should suspect the people at home too..

    Concerned Tuesday, 27 December 2022 01:54 PM

This is a load of Bullshit. Just because he had written a note thanking his Mother in law for raising a wonderful daughter does not mean he was suicidal moreover why go to the cemetery to do that was it because it AC easier to bury him Stupidity at it’s highest. Also he had stopped at a wayside snack bar to have a short meal before committing suicide. He may have thought Why due in hunger . Crazy conclusion if any

Our police thinks we are the proverbial "Konde bandappu cheenu". A suicide with hands tied and strangled with wires should be in the Guinness book of records. The story is given different angles to divert the public from the truth which could lead to interesting people. We remember Thajudeen, Lasantha, Ekneligoda murders and we know those responsible will never be caught as they are from the untouchable family that has brought Sri Lanka to this state..

Karalasingam Sivalingam Tuesday, 27 December 2022 02:14 PM

How could a suicider tie himself with the seat, hands tied, mouth too tied, mysterious murder should be probed in different angles.

    Rev. L..Joshua Tuesday, 27 December 2022 02:28 PM

Mills of God grinds slowly but surely. So let us wait patiently until the wicked are punished

You do not know our country Tuesday, 27 December 2022 07:26 PM

This is Sri Lanka. Wherever you are, it is way of the opposite of the God who runs the roost here.

Keep digging Tuesday, 27 December 2022 05:14 PM

Assisted suicide to look like murder? Life insurance in the west does not give a pay out if it is a suicide. Depending on if and where he had life insurance this theory could perhaps point in the right direction to solve this case. However, it's worth pursuing until all the facts are revealed. It would be a shame if it was indeed a murder made to look like suicide and the evidence was planted to make it look like suicide based on his financial issues. Many people would have been in and out of his house since his death. Could the wire evidence have been placed in his house by someone involved in the murder? Mr.Schaffter may have suffered financial losses but he was a brilliant man. Seasons of gains and losses are the nature of his businesses. Hard to imagine that he would be so mentally broken to plan all of this out himself.

Tissa Fernando Tuesday, 27 December 2022 05:32 PM

This is a theory that people with money , go after more money and then loose it all at once and the only way out is to leave the current life. In the UAE, several businessmen committed suicide like that. But the initial information about how he was found in the car makes it difficult to believe in this theory. But on the other hand , the news also mentioned that he died after admission to the hotel so if killers were involved then why didn't they finish the job. Very mysterious case. Our CID is very experienced in these crimes but will the truth be known at all?

Dinesh was a genius. Sri lanka police investigations are public. Why there is no privacy and respect for the loved ones. Dinesh would never have taken his own life. He was not afraid to call out the truth ,just like the daming he gave at the bond scam inquiry. The killers are at large, the orders to eliminate dinesh came from the Top, his character and moral compass lives on. RIP

Looks like the first part of a big cover-up is in progress. Must be some high-up influential person is the real culprit. Business as usual in the Sri Lanka of today.

    Dharshana Tuesday, 27 December 2022 10:06 PM

Similar cable ties are available at any hardware shop. So SL, So corrupt, So foolish.

    Gb Tuesday, 27 December 2022 10:23 PM

Who found the wire/cable at his home? Planted for sure, need to interrogate everyone who was at his home, investigators are helping cover it up, surely political influence, real culprits must be found or these kind of murders will increase

Achal de Silva Tuesday, 27 December 2022 10:36 PM

They will give verdict of suicide because they already said that evidence at the scene was destroyed. Krish perera said his hands and feet were tied but nobody else saw that. There maybe scrape marks / injuries on the wrists and ankles but it can’t confirm that he didn’t kill himself.

Web sleuth Tuesday, 27 December 2022 10:42 PM

If Krish P was involved he wouldn’t have rushed him to hospital knowing he wasn’t dead.

    Sambo Wednesday, 28 December 2022 08:45 AM

Twists and turns in Sri Lanka means there is some thing fishy. How can he tie his own hands and then strangle his neck.

Muhunthan Walker Sothilingam Thilagawathy Wednesday, 28 December 2022 09:08 AM

He would have been saved but the lack of monitoring system made him die poor man. By the way I am shame now for try to commit suicide for five times in this Nation which is Australasia but the high level of monitoring systems and medications limits and also limits of tools made me alive in this Nation. Now I am working for Australasian Defence Forces too. Mmmm some time thinks made make us worse decisions in life.

    Roshanaly Wednesday, 28 December 2022 12:33 PM

Why should he commit suicide when is about to receive the money from somebody.
