The Defence Ministry has issued Detention Orders on IUSF convenor Wasantha Mudalige and two others to be detained for 90 days and questioned, Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.

The police arrested Wasantha Mudalige, Hashan Jeevantha Gunathilake and Galwewa Siridhamma Thero on August 19 during a protest in Colombo. Later they were detained for questioning for 72 hours under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Earlier, police said that investigation and further questioning of three suspects will be handed over to Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on instructions of the IGP.

The IGP has also directed the CID to hand over the investigations to the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) if they were found to have engaged in any terrorist activities.

United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders Mary Lawlor on Sunday has requested President Ranil Wickremesinghe not to sign detention order on them. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

Parliament is the place where a den of thieves are present. they should be the ones to be taken into custody and investigated,

Those young persons was within their democratic rights, so a 90 day detention does not justify the means to an end. The Sri Lankan Police force has nurtured its own form of Gestapo and is doing 'what thou wilt'. What a sad state of governance.

THE President wants tamale life difficult for the people. I’m sure the international community as we as IMF and other countries will not hep SL

    Niroj Monday, 22 August 2022 10:28 PM

Arresting students under PTA is not at all acceptable. This means we need to not only abolish PTA and the Executive Presidency as well on the new constitution. The Country must turn back to democracy

    Cheers Tuesday, 23 August 2022 01:19 AM

Excellent move and then further extend after 90 days for 50 years in prison

They never learn ........... The public is protesting due to the economic collapse and the govt responds with brute force. This injustice created the 1970's JVP militancy and later the LTTE. Ranil is pandering to the looters and thieves in Col 7, whilst the masses languish in the provinces. Not one of the looters of the treasury has been brought to justice. It does not matter whether the IMF gives funds or not, Sri Lanka is doomed.

    Ranjan Tuesday, 23 August 2022 02:21 AM

This is not a good move by the government and will impact on IMF bailout

    Neil Tuesday, 23 August 2022 02:34 AM

This is crazy. Ranil and the government should understand the repercussions to the Country will be severe. All donor countries should stop all aid to Sri Lanka until democracy is established.

Are these the president’s imperatives for regaining Lanka from the doldrums the Pakse types led it to? How quickly RW has forgotten the very messages of the placards that appeared in April which he then seemed to endorse: ‘you’ve messed with the wrong generation!’ Taking lessons from our national treasures like the Themiya Jataka, why can’t a so called erudite president act with grace and truly deal with turning this land and its governance around? If he is beholden unto the inepts and lowlies of the slpp, and nothing more, then, an image of a 45 year so called liberal democrat’s journey comes to nought! So the protest goes on…may all Lankans be delivered from evil!

Government which is illegal has done a biggest blunder by using prevention of terrorism act to detained these university students who came forward to help the suffering masses. Their action was peaceful And we witnessed how they were being attacked by the police. Ranil who himself knows that he doesn’t have a mandate to govern this country but used our so called constitution which does not represent the will of the people to come to the present position. This is an attitude imposed on him and driven by the 134 rouges in the parliament will push Ranil in to an abyss out of which he will never be able to come out

Release Wasantha Mudalige before another blood shed and loss of life of SLPP Ministers and MP's and fire again all over SriLanka.

What about detaining orders for those who have stolen billions of dollars of public money and still free enjoying the best of life while public are starving. Where is this law hidden. Shame on the law makers of this country.

No identification for politicians of more dangerous activities - no bribery cases - no murder cases - no thuggery and forced kappam cases - no robberies - no Easter attack - All are innocent

    Terrence Tuesday, 23 August 2022 09:47 AM

Do not make a mistake like the previous President whose advisors led him astray and the whole nation had to face the consequences act prudently

Probably being beaten to elicit illigal confession Tuesday, 23 August 2022 09:59 AM

In the 70s and 80s there was much similar to this. Then there was armed insurgency. How voicing concern is met with investigation as a terrorist. This is politics gone thoroughly wrong. It is definitely hate on the part of the government towards protests that makes this happen. Government MP whose house burned down want their pound of flesh. I expect the arrested parties will be abused in all manner until they can be found to have done terrorist activity. Of they they haven't but under torture they might say wrong thing that didn't happen, so police then happy and hand them over as known terrorist.

Not the Defence Ministry tell Defence Minister. Paper is trying to white wash.

    Sunil Tuesday, 23 August 2022 04:02 PM

The country's track record on fundamental rights has now reached the lowest ebb possible. Even at the risk of further misery for the people, the IMF and other donor agencies should not give any assistance to our government unless and until the human rights situation in the country shows some significant improvement. The days of this sordid regime are also heavily numbered.

With costs some people are making a fortune. Tuesday, 23 August 2022 08:10 PM

Arresting the Aragallya participants is the min issue for Ranil but his countrymen are undergoing various difficulties to live the. Also this country is 5th country with inflationary prices. Very soon we will become no 1 country inthe world and all credits should go to Rajapakshas/ Ranil. Ranil's only problem is stop the protests.

Adam Speak Wednesday, 24 August 2022 12:15 AM

Wow. Defense Ministry trying to intimidate Students and Activists. What an insecurity and coward act. When will the Govt. Leaders, Defense and Police including the Judicial will learn to bring peace and security in the country. 2 wrongs doesn't make 1 right. Enough is enough of all these nonsense to protect the Ruling Class (1% against 99% of Sri Lanka's Population. Just wake up and be rational and practical without destroying the Motherland.

Senior Citizen Wednesday, 24 August 2022 06:33 AM

The uprising of the people has achieved no opposition, no insurgency, no terrorism or church bombings could ever achieve. Dethroning a president, a prime minister and a cabinet of ministers without violence!!!!. Unpresidented storming of the city by ordinary people!. Calling it terrorism is madness.
