Several business chambers, including the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, in a joint statement today expressed concerns about the move by some organizations to call for mass protests on 2nd November.

“While recognizing their freedom of speech and right to express views, the chambers request all parties to call off protests of this nature that could undermine the efforts being taken to resolve the current economic crisis with the support of the international community,” they said in a statement.

“Any act of destabilization taking place at this time and any negative publicity arising from it would seriously derail actions that are being taken to revive the economy including the efforts being taken to promote tourism,” it added.

This statement has been issued by the following Chambers; Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC), Chamber of Young Lanka Entrepreneurs (COYLE), Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL), International Chamber of Commerce Sri Lanka (ICCSL), National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka (NCE) and Women's Chamber of Industry and Commerce (WCIC).

A bunch of clowns. Only think of there coffers. They should come with a plan to rid the economic burden of the masses. Anyway who are these clowns to make such requests.

    Jayaratne Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:14 PM

And the pro-ranil propaganda of daily mirror is also crystal clear. Hope they have the decency to publish this comment at least.

Don Harrison Tuesday, 01 November 2022 03:51 PM

In a desperate effort to avoid a bloody confrontation between the government armed forces and the peoples alliances the leaders of all parties must unite and have swift action to stop the decay of law and order. As a anti war alliance action comitee member globally many does not understand the consequences of mass gathering of people looking for justice. Some groups may go underground and carry on campaign by sabotage the ruling party needs taking a step back and review their strategy. The fear and uncertainty mixed with hunger and starvation will drive masses to make desperate decisions to combat at any costs.

Sri Lanka is teetering on tyrannical government. Better country the crumbled and then rebuilt with western aid unlimited than continue this way under SLPP and Ranil/UNP. UNP is historically genocidal In 1949, the UNP government stripped the Indian Tamils of their nationality, including their right to vote. The Sirima-Shastri Pact of 1964 and Indira-Sirimavo supplementary agreement of 1974 paved the way for the deportation of 600,000 persons of Indian origin to India. That's what provoked the Jaffna Tamil to fight for separate state.

Buisness Chambers should request the gov. to make sure this protest is a peaceful protest. I do not see how a peaceful protest can derail the efforts to revive the economy. If they resort to long TU action, then the BCs should intervene and make this request. People need to feel that they can be heard! If the gov. tries to stop/repress it, then it will ruin the economic revival. So it will be the gov that will be hindering "economic progress" by engaging in violence to suppress the protest!

    tilak Tuesday, 01 November 2022 03:56 PM

hey Mizaru- These people whom you refer to as " clowns" are the ones who are employing people who pay taxes to run this country, not the protesting politicians whom you want to suck up to

    Sokrates Tuesday, 01 November 2022 03:57 PM

Dirty greedy pricks. Even at the time of the Nazi dictatorship in Germany, the industrialists sided with Hitler for selfish reasons. It doesn't matter to these opportunists if human rights are respected here in Sri Lanka and if a criminal gang consisting of looters, thieves, fraudsters and murderers is in government.

    Kandy Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:02 PM

It was those in these Chambers hoodwinked the govts to allow part of the export proceeds to be kept in overseas banks. Country lost foreign exchange due to this too.

    Mahila Tuesday, 01 November 2022 06:27 PM

What proof do we have the BC's had a hand in retaining the export proceeds illegally in overseas accounts!!?? That was done by crooks on the own volition and not by Business Chambers!!?? One should be careful in making wild accusations!?? What proof if any, that you have in this regard!!??

    Kandy Wednesday, 02 November 2022 10:34 AM

    There is ample proof

    sam Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:03 PM

Protest is a peaceful protest. These chambers are a bunch of clowns

    Nuwan Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:03 PM

No one has a plan. At least the business community should start thinking long term now. Many businesses think short term. Rip off clients and run away with money to tax havens.

    Mawella K Prematilleke Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:21 PM

Businesses chambers should request the govt to stop mass arrests using draconian laws, then no one needs to protest. It's very strange to request to cease agitation against injustice and cruelty

Action for freedom Wednesday, 02 November 2022 09:04 PM

Nothing strange. Business Chambers members are beneficiaries of the regime. They may have hidden agreements with SLPP, including putting aside money in accounts for funding for next election. If they were on the losing end they would cry out and complain, so clearly they are on the gaining side by the SLPP continuing to be in power.

    Ravindu Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:35 PM

Nothing wrong with peaceful protest. Hopefully no hidden agenda by any political party to destroy stability of country right now. Let the general election to decide the peoples power.

    Sunil Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:35 PM

These protests which are absolutely vital to compel this sordid government to restore democracy and the fundamental rights of the people and to take swift action to alleviate the misery that the people are undergoing at present will be peaceful until the police try to suppress these by their violent means.

Concerned Citizen Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:36 PM

If you don’t want protests then the government should call for immediate election to ensure that democracy prevails in the country. At the moment the government does not have support of the citizens and only general elections will ensure a proper democratic process for all decisions taken at the highest levels on behalf of the country.

    ANNECUNT Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:36 PM

Does business chambers going to feed 22 million starving people. school children are fainting in school JAYAWEWA ARAGALALAYA

Karalasingam Sivalingam Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:53 PM

The inciters and leaders will escape, but the unsuspecting participants will be dealt with, do not disobey, be violent but be peaceful .

Action for freedom Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:54 PM

Ukraine promised trillion dollars for rebuild if they beat Russia. The freedom fighters would get adequate funding from the west to rebuild the nation, if they push out the current corrupt power holders and their 300,000 plus sized public freedom suppression group - the military.

    Chandra J Tuesday, 01 November 2022 04:55 PM

It looks unusual why such a request is made when the vast majority of the citizens are making an effort to restore and demand major reforms in democratic processes/establishments and good governance instead of corrupt politics and economic mismanagement through peaceful protests within the Constitution of the country. This may lead to perception of bias on the part of these business chambers. Good governance and absence of corrupt politics is key to sustainable development.

    Democrat Tuesday, 01 November 2022 05:03 PM

Instead of requesting to call off the protest ,business chamber should request this government which has no people’s mandate to govern this country to hold an election ,allowing people to select their own government.

Concerned Citizen Tuesday, 01 November 2022 05:03 PM

What are the Chambers doing about high taxes imposed on the already suffering private sector employees ? People will not protest if they know that the government has taken steps to cut down spending and reduce the need for higher taxes . However the government keeps spending more on defense budget and other unnecessary luxuries for public officials and Chambers should take this up immediately with the government if you want to stop the protests !

    Dee Tuesday, 01 November 2022 05:07 PM

We don't care about any economic recovery. We have no clue about solutions. All we want is to have elections. Because this is our only chance to come into power!

freddy foxx Tuesday, 01 November 2022 05:12 PM

What these Chamber bafoon's apparently do not know the actual motive of this protest.

    Bandu Tuesday, 01 November 2022 05:19 PM

First these Biz Chambers should request the govt to release the unjustly arrested under PTA and also stop efforts to ban peaceful protests or incite the protesters to violence.

Silent majority Tuesday, 01 November 2022 05:19 PM

To all those vociferous protestors, who bring their little ones to add flavor to processions, rogues who fled away from Sri Lanka in July, and all those who did not get ministerial post for their single member party! Please remember, there is a huge SILENT majority in this country who love to live in PEACE. It is this same silent majority who chased away the JVPs way back I It is this same silent majority who chased Gota and his team. We are watching you SILENTLY. Don't antagonize us.

Action for freedom Tuesday, 01 November 2022 05:38 PM

What are you going to do? Attack and kill the protestors if your antagonised? You are the voice for the abuser of freedom, a terrorist with your threat against decent fair, free democracy.

Love Sri Lanka Tuesday, 01 November 2022 05:23 PM

Common Ladies and Gentlemen from the so called " business chambers". Country before self. Remember if the system change requested by the youth of this country are not achieved we will have a huge disaster in the near future. "think of the children" for once. It seems that you can see only the plate in front of you and not about tomorrow. You are just bum sucking politicians for your benefit it seems.

Tissa Fernando Tuesday, 01 November 2022 05:46 PM

JVP contract killers and SJB idiots along with some mentally disturbed people like Joshef Stalin and Hirunika are trying to disrupt the country again. They want to stop tourist arrivals, they want to stop IMF bailouts and they just want to protest

Aluth Yakek Thami Wednesday, 02 November 2022 09:00 PM

Well, from now on I'll take your posts as being coloured by your being SLPP/UNP fanatic.

Pantha Kumaran Tuesday, 01 November 2022 05:58 PM

I do not at all happy on Business Chambers request. They are very selfish. They all are well do . They think about their own interest. This country of ours is robbed by politicians and now the same lot want to get back to power. Needless to say Ranil Rajapakse is one of them. We want change of government and we want honest people to run the country. We had enough of these crooks.

    KD Tuesday, 01 November 2022 06:18 PM

People commenting are really clueless. Businesses are the ones making the country function. Ranil has done A LOT to rescue the country from where it was in July. Be GRATEFUL. Stop whining constantly. Open your eyes.

Taniya Fernando Tuesday, 01 November 2022 06:37 PM

The people are protesting because that they can’t cope with the pain and suffering they endure. The Colombo based businessman are the people brought this corrupt government to power. They don’t feel the pain of poor people. The business people can go to hell, they made billions from this corrupt system.

Harak Katak Wednesday, 02 November 2022 09:02 PM

It's like that always. Those rich and wealthy who want a regime to stay on, will support it with the voices. Similarly, it should be obvious only supporters of the regime stand to benefit from it in some way.

    ala Tuesday, 01 November 2022 07:37 PM

Then take on the parliament system and its incompetent uneducated public reps and carry on with the struggle without criticising the "aragalaya". Your inaction is a cause for our country to get bankrupt.
