UN Human Rights Office following double standards :RW

Colombo, February 26 (Daily Mirror)- Whilst highlighting that UN Human Rights Office is following double standards by treating Ukraine and Sri Lanka differently, Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe today said both the current government and the rest of the political parties should take this matter seriously.

“Sri Lankan government and other stakeholders should take up this matter now as a UN Human Rights Commission is expected to take up a resolution in September this year,” Wickremesinghe told a group of youth whom he met yesterday at his office.

“Global politics have taken a shift with USA trying to end the war in Ukraine with Russia. Russians have made sacrifices to win their objectives. They burnt their capital to defeat Napoleon. Many European nations have been silent on Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. They have been silent on Ukraine not holding its Presidential election. The constitution of that country provides provision to put off general election when martial law is in force. However the constitution does not say anything about the presidential election. The UK postponed their election during World War 1 and World War 2. This was done with the support of the House of Commons and House of Lords. Prime Minister Winston Churchill became Prime Minister after Conservative, Labor and Liberal party members cheered him in Parliament. There is no written law in UK,” he recalled.

“In Sri Lanka we held elections at time when the LTTE was fighting in the North and JVP in the South. Sri Lanka has held elections on time. We held elections in 2024 and a JVP led government is in power currently. The JVP did not only win the election but we have been able to bring them into a democratic system. However the UN Human Rights Office is following double standards and they treat Sri Lanka differently. The current government and all of us must take this situation up especially as the UN Human Rights Office is to take up a resolution on Sri Lanka in September this year,” Wickremesinghe said.
