Colombo, Dec.12 (Daily Mirror) - In the wake of the organisations from countries such as Russia, China, Denmark and the United States proposing to invest in nuclear energy, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authority (SLAEA) has given the green light for nuke power, an official said.

Russia which has already invested in nuclear power generation in Bangladesh and India in the region has shown a keener interest in putting up a plant in Sri Lanka. A high-level delegation from Russia which was in Sri Lanka recently discussed the proposed cooperation in the nuclear energy sector among others with the Sri Lankan authorities.

SLAEA Chairman Prof. S.R.D. Rosa told Daily Mirror that he briefed the delegation about the current status regarding the Russian proposal for the development of an offshore or an onshore nuclear power plant in Sri Lanka. He said his office had basically given its nod for nuclear power to increase Sri Lanka’s energy mix, and it had been sent to the Foreign Ministry for approval.

“We can implement this project only if the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) is signed between Sri Lanka and Russia. That is now pending,” he said.

Russia has offered assistance in terms of capacity building and training Sri Lankans in the field. According to the proposal, small modular reactors (SMRs) which are advanced nuclear reactors are to be installed in the event a policy decision is taken. However, the financing model of the project, which is likely to cost more than US $ 2 billion has not yet been discussed.

Asked about safety, Prof. Rosa said SMRs are inherently safe. He asserted that it is advisable for Sri Lanka to have nuclear power in its energy mix.

Commenting on proposals from other countries, he said a Chinese delegation also held talks with the SLAEA.

“We have received proposals from the companies in the United States and Denmark too,” he said.

december 11,2023 The most dangerous proposal to encourage NUCLEAR power in SL when there are other safer options.Whatever precautions are taken are useless in a country where bribery can overcome the the most stringent laws. Negotiate with India and obtain power from their grid in the South with no risk no SL

    Hathurusinghe Tuesday, 12 December 2023 06:14 PM

Getting from India means, India builds reactor to export electricity then we pay imported electricity prices. We have always been self-sufficient with electricity, and having our own nuclear reactors means we can even export electricity to India.

First, the energy minister, Kanchana, should learn to operate an ice cream van. With incompetent idiots like him, we may be signing our death warrant. Luckily, these "proposals" never see the day of light.

Let's go a step further and build nuclear weapons. Then the scumbags in government can nuke it's own citizens.

    KD Tuesday, 12 December 2023 08:11 AM

Another brainless move. One nuclear disaster is all it takes to make the entire island unliveable. People please speak out now before this snowballs.

    H.N.A. Majeed Tuesday, 12 December 2023 08:15 AM

This is preposterous! $2 B to build a virtual nuclear bomb in our backyard when we seem unable to maintain a coal powered power plant. There will be increasing reliance on foreign expertise for nuclear power generation. At a time when we have abundant opportunities to harness clean and sustainable energy from sources like solar, wind, and potentially hydroelectric power, it is disheartening to witness a continued investment in nuclear

    Hathurusinghe Tuesday, 12 December 2023 06:18 PM

The nuclear reactor has to be run and maintained by the Russians then it can be safe. Just like there are private power stations, the nuclear reactor can be owned and operated by the Russians. Russia can even put in their own security for the nuclear reactor. Even in Ukraine there are nuclear reactors, and that is war zone, but no one wants to bomb the nuclear reactors.

    VJ Tuesday, 12 December 2023 08:27 AM

Good move, the best way forward. It is better late than never. This will trigger an avalanche of protest for sure. Clean energy but may not be cheap, sourcing fuel and storing used fuel will be expensive and could add to the cost of the end product.

    Jude Tuesday, 12 December 2023 08:33 AM

Nuclear power plants build in modern day is absolutely very safe!! However the cost to build, astronomical and cost overruns are very common!! Moreover, Time frame to build oftenly run beyond the original schedule, yeah. But once it's built it's gonna be cheaper power alternative and cheaper to maintain the plant!!

    LUTER Tuesday, 12 December 2023 08:45 AM

I AM GOING TO WORKING TO THE UNMANNED TEA SHOP. FIND OUT NUCLEAR POWER PLANT LOCATION.

    lali Tuesday, 12 December 2023 09:16 AM

Nuclear power in the mix is a must to cap green house emissions.... French and Japanese government get 70 percent from nuclear.... We should look at nuclear power with serious intent

John Maioha Stewart Tuesday, 12 December 2023 09:41 AM

Where will the billions and billions of dollars come from? Sri Lanka should be covered in solar panels but it is not. There are enormous solar farms close to us in India, and we should be copying them. I have just added more solar panels to my house, with a pay back period of just three years. This should be encouraged throughout Sri Lanka.

Liberal One Tuesday, 12 December 2023 09:58 AM

People will oppose this from their arm chairs and then demand cheap electricity next day from the same arm chair.

    Bandu Tuesday, 12 December 2023 10:08 AM

Seriously, the nuclear companies will bribe politicians and government regulators and forgo safety and environmental safety. If you want to get sick from radiations support this idiotic idea. SL has plenty of sun and wind use solar and wind farms much safer and cheaper.

    Patroit Tuesday, 12 December 2023 10:32 AM

The portrayal of solar plants as a feasible alternative for energy generation, by certain Western media outlets, is misleading and can be classified as propaganda. Setting up solar farms necessitates the destruction of entire ecosystems, and the energy produced is minuscule in comparison to that generated by nuclear plants. Moreover, the cost of implementing solar panels is high, and the process is not sustainable as the panels need to be replaced regularly, resulting in a significant environmental threat. Many individuals are hesitant to embrace nuclear energy due to a lack of understanding. However, given its affordability and sustainability, nuclear energy is many countries' best possible energy source.

    Daya Tuesday, 12 December 2023 10:45 AM

Total disaster for Sri Lanka and its citizens. Nuclear is one of the most dangerous stuff and especially in Sri Lanka, our greedy politicians will pay for the used, cheaper plant and we can expect another disaster. I don't understand why the government wants to go for Nuclear power when other cheaper greener options are available with plenty of investors. End of the day, it's all about "how much to make". The government will never go for an election until they can completely loot the country, though we have been already looted.

    Sokrates Tuesday, 12 December 2023 11:25 AM

Have you learned nothing from the maximum credible nuclear accidents in Chernobyl and Fukushima? And then you want to have these nuclear power plants built by countries like Russia or China, which are not exactly technically up to date (see the Chinese power plant, where accidents are constantly happening and repairs are necessary). With good energy management, Sri Lanka would be able to generate enough electricity with hydropower, wind and solar power. Even Hydrogen could be produced in Sri Lanka. There will be a huge demand for hydrogen worldwide and Sri Lanka would be able to produce and sell it. Nuclear power plants would also deter tourists.

New equilibrium Tuesday, 12 December 2023 10:30 PM

Sadly Sri Lankans have a false sense that they are brilliant and good at everything. Those brilliant SLns are no longer in SL. The ones still in SL are brilliant in all the wrong things and make these dangerous decisions. See the economic state of the country. It will be the same story with nuclear power generation too. Much advanced countries like Japan and Russia couldn't prevent nuclear disasters happening. In SL one nuclear disasters will be sufficient to distroy the entire country. Probably that's how nature finds a new equilibrium.

    Globe Tuesday, 12 December 2023 11:34 AM

Its rosy when country people feel high pressure caused by all around attacks, robbers launched on them; to stbilize and quickly restore sudden blackouts in an era nukes awaits for its destructive role to create no pressureg, cool environmental zones on the targets. Global interest for electric power generation is admirable.

    Hathurusinghe Tuesday, 12 December 2023 06:22 PM

Cop28 biggest interest is nuclear power. Nuclear is most reliable source of generation next to fossil fuels. Renewable alone will only cause more global warming and damage to wold. When sun is out, no solar panel works. When drought hyrdo does not work. When there is too much or not enough wind, the wind power stalls. Nuclear power then there is chance of avoiding climate disaster and reduce blackouts.

    Ram Tuesday, 12 December 2023 11:37 AM

Good decision. Who gets the commission, all the people or a particular individual

    Kethirina Tuesday, 12 December 2023 01:16 PM

May be around 1% of our citizons became negative thinkers by birth itself. Some have became agents of varies foreign interests. Some are against any developments. Majority of population are struggling to live. I believe this government has a firm backbone to take best decisions towards any critical issues.

Hard truth Tuesday, 12 December 2023 02:33 PM

Nuclear power is too big for Sri Lankan political and government mechanisms to understand and implement. Even the Coal plant Nuraicholai is not running properly due to low-quality raw materials, machinery faults, Trade unions, Sabotage, corruption, and waste. Commission making talks.

    Concerned Tuesday, 12 December 2023 07:14 PM

Such a tiny island as Sri Lanka, does it have the capacity for this?? Is the government signing people's death warrant??

No discrimination Tuesday, 12 December 2023 10:16 PM

Most likely in the north or east. A legitimate way to obliterate the population through an accident. But nuclear power won't discriminate.
