Colombo, December 27 (Daily Mirror)- An individual who appeared as a Ministry official of the Public Security Ministry had deceived Public Security Deputy Minister Sunil Watagala and Ministry officilals and fled after obtaining 17 new passports.
Public Security Deputy Minister Sunil Watagala revealed during an interview with a local TV channel that the particular individual had escorted him to various departments of the Ministry on the day he assumed duties and even hosted a tea party.
Deputy Minister Watagala said the individual had told the Ministry officials that he was sent by the Presidential Secretariat to coordinate the function.
He said it was revealed the following day when he visited the Ministry that the individual had obtained 17 new passports claiming that it was an order from the Deputy Minister Watagala.
He said after inquiries it was revealed that the individual was an outsider named Nishantha.
"Then, I ordered the IGP to arrest the individual,' he said.

This crook received the Dept officials and they should be taken to task. Not the Minister. The Dept head should have crossed checked with the Minister before handing over the passports. Is seems the department official arr involved in this racket.

On claiming that it was an order from the Deputy Minister Watagala, the Dept head allowed the issue - no checks? Surely the Dy Minister has a phone at least to check. Are these guys at the Dept called MisAdministrators?

Whatever is said now the fact remains that officers were deceived by this fraudster. Blank PPs must not be released even if a letter from the Minister is prodused as Blanks cannot leave the Department

No other forces need to do anything to topple this government mate. NPP politicians itself will do it. Look at the statements made by them few years ago and what they say and do now. lol

Oh, wonderful! The classic explanation of all politicians (and their stooges): the Opposition is doing this to bring disrepute to the government! I thought this lot was supposed to be different but here are their supporters (aka cult members, slaves) falling back on the same old excuse! The fact is, even if it was the Opposition that brought in the guy called Nishantha, it was the sheer inexperienced response of the Minister and relevant officials of the Ministry that brings disrepute! You can't blame the Opposition for that, matey!

You are Minister of Public Security and this Nishantha made you a punk in your subject. Whatever he stated and did, how was it technically he got 17 passports issued? This shows, you fellows will bow and bend the rules like punks.

Conned on by the second day, con artists everywhere Friday, 27 December 2024 04:33 PM
This individual called Nishantha may not even be the name of the con artist. It is obvious the crook planned the whole activity to steal the passports, with even hosting a tea party. Sorry to see department and Minister just believes any stranger who just comes along, and got conned like it has happened.

Stranger escorted the minister inside the department? Friday, 27 December 2024 05:27 PM
I am sure this is a prank pulled by a guy too smart for his shoes. May be he is trying to prove that the new ministers are strangers in politics and have to learn a few ropes. Is this what Ranil meant, when he mentioned about necessity of experienced politicians. The minister is a stranger, agreed. But what about all the other Govt. servants including the tea boys and Peon mahattayas? Communication between the Ministry and Presidential Secretariat is superb!

COMMUNICATION AND INTERCOMMUNICATION IS VITAL FOR ANY GOVT. Saturday, 28 December 2024 09:13 AM
COMMUNICATIONS IS NON EXISTENT AS IS CLEARLY PROVED IN THIS INSTANCE. UNLESS THERE IS COMMUNICATION IN AND OUT WITH ALL MINISTRIES THIS INCIDENT WILL BE REPEATED IN ANOTHER MINISTRY.

How can this happen, that the con artist so deceived so many? No one check who he is? No one even know his name? The 17 passports will be in India for fraudsters by next week.

This is a complete systemic failure which is probably common throughout SL Govt. Departments. First of all, need to hold people accountable by dismissing the officials involved including the Controller of Immigration

Ordering the acting IGP to arrest a person - won't this be a violation of the law by interfering with the Police duties? The correct procedure would have been to lodge a complaint with the Police and the Police to take action. PM Harini, is NPP becoming another Rajapakse regime?

This is very hilarious, but definitely reveal the weaknesses of our government officers. The officials who issued the passports without following the procedures should be held accountable. Nobody should be allowed to release passports in this way, regardless of who ordered it. Didn't they consider checking back with the deputy minister before issuing them? Also, this could be a well-planned scheme to discredit the new government. There are many corrupt officials in every government department.

Totally wired! How can someone receive a blank passport from the immigration department? With these blank passports, what is he going to do? The police and immigration department should now ban these numbers and provide the offender's photo so that he can be taken into custody.

LOL. They deceived the whole country. Now a single individual have deceived them. Can you beleve these kind of grade 2 stories. And what authority you have to call the IGP and order him. If you want an investigation done, go to police station and make a complaint. SYSTEM CHANGE ..

Fahim reasons Saturday, 28 December 2024 07:53 AM
This is deeply concerning, likely for the first time in our history. There are countless ways to verify his identity before releasing the passports. Deputy minister incompetent, he must either resign or be changed . Shows he has no knowledge or experience how to manage and instruct the staff. Regret, no excuse and no other alternative.

I think the Passport official who handed over the 17 pps should actually take responsibility because he should have doubt checked with the ministry office or minister prior to releasing the passports that’s common sense. Anyone can duped judging from the article on how the individual behaved.

Inshi Saturday, 28 December 2024 09:54 AM
Department of Immigration can track down the passports that have the 17 serial numbers, unless it is for people whose passports are questionable. Using names and power to get things done has to stop. Obtain the passport by following the rules.

This is NOT ONLY ONE MAN ACT. I THINK it IS a well-planned TEAMWORK. Legal inquiry should be made against the culprits and punished involving officers. We don't want the reason to be foolish. The government must take immediate action to issue a new passport to those who have already applied for and paid the money before nine months.
