Colombo, Dec.27 (Daily Mirror) - The appointment of the members to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has now been delayed for nearly one month due to difference of opinion between the Constitutional Council (CC) and the Executive on the nominees, Daily Mirror learns.

An informed source said the Executive insisted on three names to be appointed to the Commission to be established in terms of the newly enacted Anti-Corruption Act.

The CC is reported to have endorsed one time Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Neil Iddawela as the Chairman of the Commission as recommended by the Executive.

However, it has not agreed to the two other nominees proposed. Instead, the CC sent the names of two others about one month ago.

Still, the appointments have not been made resulting in the inability to operationalize the new Anti- Corruption Act in full.

Am I surprised - NO. This is typical when one party to a decision is partial to corruption and other not. In this case it is obvious as the last Chairman appointed in 2015 with fanfare only helped the corrupt as exposed by Ranjan.

The anti corruption drive all will not be successful in SL because of political interference. It is only waste of public money by the so called council and commission etc. Already SL has gone to dogs because of corruption

Only 3 or 4 Judge team makes the final Decision Wednesday, 27 December 2023 08:56 AM

Politicians and Parliamentarians should not get involved if it’s a politician on investigation. Only the judiciary without any involvement of anyone even the president makes the final decision.

Incredible! Submissive to the demands of the IMF on one side and trying to stamp his authority on the CC on the other. Isn't the CIABOC a requirement of the IMF?

Let the people know the names put forward and the names the rejected by the CC. Let us also know the names of those who dissented for each. We can then decide who is hellbent on safeguarding corruption.

A good example of corruption is the recent appointment of IGP. The corrupt finally got a corrupt convicted individual somehow browbeating the CC into submission. That is why it is said in SL corruption starts at the top.

NO THANKS TO THE RAJAPAKSAS, CORRUPTION IS NOW INGRAINED INTO SRI LANKAN SOCIETY. AN ANTI-CORRUPTION AGENCY IS NOT GOING TO MAKE THE SLIGHTEST DIFFERENCE.

What is the big fun to have a CC if it has to bow down to the Executive directions? Sole purpose of the CC is lost. Only in Sri Lanka

If there is will, there is a way. When the real intention is to have toothless agencies to fake investigations, in order to protect the ultra corrupt, the looting continues unabatedly.

Current 'Executive' is corruption Wednesday, 27 December 2023 02:38 PM

The Executive is single person, and clearly the most corrupt of all. The 'Executive' is trying to install UNP cronies, to who will overlook all wrongdoing by those in their party.

It is the adage " Set a Thief to catch a Thief". We, the public are convinced, rightly or wrongly, all our Politicians are corrupt or have close friends who are corrupt and needs to be protected. Surely, there must be a few honest people who will stand up to these rogues.

Don't forget the lady in waiting Wednesday, 27 December 2023 04:39 PM

Do you want to send Hirunika to the residences of the Executive and/or CC members? This is the great lady who made Gota to run away through the back door of his residence. This lady and her followers are still available for emergency needs.

All those commenting here must first find out the composition of CC and then decide! I think the acting IGP was the one the majority of the CC wanted! Executive tried to avoid it by recommending the extension of the out going IGP!

The Constitutional Council is a child of the Constitution of the country. So the President, or the Government, or the Speaker or anyone else cannot claim ownership of the CC. Since it's born from the Constitution it only belongs to the citizen of this nation.
