President Donald Trump Floats $5 Million ‘Gold Card’ as a Route to US Citizenship

In a significant shift in U.S. immigration policy, President Donald Trump has announced the introduction of a “$5 million Gold Card” visa program, designed to offer affluent foreign nationals a direct pathway to U.S. citizenship. This initiative is set to replace the existing           EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program, which has been in place since 1990. The announcement has sparked a wide range of reactions, from support for its potential economic benefits to criticism over the ethical implications of monetizing American citizenship.

Under the proposed Gold Card program, foreign individuals willing to invest $5 million into the U.S. economy would be granted residency rights, with a streamlined route to full citizenship. This marks a significant increase from the EB-5 program’s investment requirements, which stood at $1 million, or $800,000 in targeted employment areas. President Trump emphasized that this new initiative aims to attract high-net-worth individuals who can make substantial contributions to the nation’s economic growth. During the announcement, President Trump suggested that the program would be open to all qualified investors, including Russian oligarchs. He stated, “Yeah, possibly. Hey. I know some Russian oligarchs that are very nice people.” This inclusivity has raised concerns among critics about potential national security risks and the ethical ramifications of granting citizenship based on wealth.

Proponents of the Gold Card visa argue that it could serve as a robust economic stimulus by attracting significant foreign investments. The infusion of capital from wealthy individuals is expected to lead to job creation, business expansion, and enhanced competitiveness in the global market. Supporters also contend that the higher investment threshold would deter fraudulent activities and ensure that only serious investors participate. However, some financial and immigration advisors express scepticism about the program’s potential success. Concerns have been raised that the $5 million price tag may deter even the wealthiest investors, especially when considering potential tax implications and the availability of more attractive investment-based residency programs in other countries.

Critics argue that the Gold Card proposal effectively commodifies American citizenship, undermining the nation’s values of equal opportunity and fairness. There is apprehension that such a program would create a system where wealth, rather than merit or humanitarian considerations, becomes the primary criterion for immigration. Additionally, the inclusion of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including Russian oligarchs, has raised national security and ethical questions. The potential for money laundering, influence peddling, and other illicit activities associated with granting citizenship based on financial contributions has been a focal point of concern among policymakers and the public alike. The Gold Card proposal emerges at a time when several countries are re-evaluating their investment-based residency programs. The European Union, for instance, has been pressuring member states to tighten or abolish “golden visa” schemes due to concerns over minimal economic benefits, tax evasion risks, and potential property market disruptions.

As the U.S. contemplates this significant policy shift, it faces the challenge of balancing economic interests with ethical considerations and national security. The forthcoming details of the Gold Card program will be crucial in determining its reception among policymakers, potential investors, and the American public.

The film’s exploration of a papal election brought together a distinguished cast, including Ralph Fiennes, who, in his speech, emphasized the significance of community in storytelling. In television, the historical drama “Shōgun” dominated with four awards, including Drama Ensemble and both Best Male and Female Actor in a Drama Series. Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, who were honoured for their performances, expressed heartfelt gratitude, with Sanada noting that the show demonstrated how “acting is a universal language.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award was bestowed upon Jane Fonda, whose illustrious career spans decades of influential work both on and off the screen. At 87, Fonda received a standing ovation and used her platform to address current socio-political challenges, urging, “We mustn’t for a moment kid ourselves about what is happening. This is big-time serious, folks.” Her call to action resonated with many, reflecting her longstanding commitment to activism and social justice.

The SAG Awards often serve as a bellwether for the Academy Awards, with actors comprising a significant portion of the voting body. This year’s results have introduced intriguing dynamics into the Oscars race, particularly with Chalamet’s unexpected win over Brody, suggesting potential surprises in the upcoming ceremony scheduled for March 2nd. Overall, the 2025 SAG Awards not only honoured individual and collective artistic achievements but also highlighted the industry’s ongoing evolution towards inclusivity and the celebration of diverse narratives.

As the world navigates these events, the legacies of Michelle Trachtenberg and Gene Hackman serve as reminders of the profound impact of artistic expression, while ongoing political and cultural discussions continue to shape the global landscape.
