Zahira host Thomians, Joes meet Wesley in pick of the matches

All eyes will be on two crucial inter school rugby matches today when giant killers Zahira College host S. Thomas’ College at Maradana and St. Joseph’s College meet Wesley College at Londen Place in the ongoing Dialog School Rugby League tournament.

The fourth week of matches scheduled to be played today will be crucial for the five unbeaten teams, defending champions Trinity, last year’s runner up Wesley, Isipathana, St Peter’s and Zahira who have won their three matches that they have played and will be aiming to chalk up their fourth successive wins.

Due to the prevailing weather the matches are scheduled to kick off at 3.30 pm.

A win for the five unbeaten teams will see them qualify to the Cup segment of the tournament. But defeat will not mean they will not stand a chance as they have one more league match to be played.

The other teams that will be seeking to book a berth to the Cup segment are Royal, St Joseph’s, S. Thomas’ Thurstan and Sri Sumangala who have won two matches each

Zahira with their thrilling win against Royal last week will be moving into the game with their heads held high and confident. According to form the scale is in favour of Zahira. But the Thomians are not going to be easy nuts to crack.

Wesley with three wins has the edge over St Joseph’s who too are not going to be easy meat, but the game should be a closely contested affair.

St Peter’s and Trinity should have little difficulty in brushing off the challenge of Ananda and DS Senanayake at Rajagiriya and most probably at Police Park respectively.

Two teams looking for their first win, Mahanama and Prince of Wales with three defeats each, will lock horns at the Air Force ground in Ratmalana.

Tomorrow the high riding Thurstan are favoured to come out on top against host Science College at Mount Lavinia.
