Tharanga Gunesekera shines at Home Lands Monthly Medal

Veteran and top-class golfer, former Trinitian, Tharanga Gunesekera emerged as the star performer at the Home Lands July Monthly Medal Golf Tournament, producing an outstanding round of 63 nett on a back-nine countback to claim the Overall Winner’s title, which concluded at the Royal Colombo Golf Club last weekend.

Gunesekera also dominated Division B (Handicap 10-18), winning both the Nett and Gross titles, while Guyanga Weerasekera finished runner-up in the nett category. In Division A, hard-hitting long-range driver Sachin De Silva enjoyed an impressive outing by securing both the Nett and Gross championships, with Kumar Danushan taking the runner-up position in the nett.

Sheahan Daniel claimed the Division C Nett title ahead of Moditha Silva, while Jay Ong won the Gross championship. V.K. Vasan captured the Seniors Nett title with Kumar Boralessa taking the Gross honours. Sunil Udalagama completed a memorable double by winning both the Masters Nett and Gross crowns. 

Among the juniors, Kaiyan Johnpillai swept both the Nett and Gross titles after edging Vinuda Weerasinghe on countback. In the Ladies’ events, Sanduni Wanasinghe won the Silver Nett title while Maleena Awn secured the Silver Gross award. Manori Jayakody topped the Bronze Nett division, with Elsie Pathmanathan winning the Gross category. Myungock Jane Hong completed a double in the Ladies Seniors division by claiming both the Nett and Gross titles. 

Sachin De Silva for the Longest Drive and Hiranya Gunasekera for Closest to the PIN highlighting another successful monthly competition backed by the tournament sponsors Home Lands and the Royal Colombo Golf Club, which continues to promote competitive golf across all age groups and handicap divisions.
