Premachanthiran appointed acting DG of Sports

The Additional Director General of the Department of Sports Development, V. Premachanthiran, has been appointed to function as the Director General of Sports (DG), a post which had been vacant since July 12, 2025, according to sources in the Ministry of Sports.

The Position fell vacant following the completion of the services of Prof. Shamal Fernando, who served as DG from 2023. 

Premachanthiran has now been entrusted with overseeing the department’s operations until further notice.

Prof. Shamal Fernando, a retired Rear Admiral of the Navy, was widely regarded as a capable and accomplished administrator during his tenure at the department.

It is reported that Prof. Fernando had expressed his willingness to continue for another year, but the Cabinet did not respond to his request for an extension according to the Ministry.
