St. Peter’s player Hasara Madugaspe attempts to brush off a Mahanama defender
St. Peter’s College went on the rampage against underdog Mahanama College as they won by a whopping 67 points to nil in their inter school league rugby match at Bambalapitiya yesterday.
Mahanama did not have a dog’s chance to cross the Peterite defence in a match of one-way traffic as the home team in contrast ran circles around them. The writing was on the wall from the very beginning and the Peterites ended the match scoring as many as 11 tries in all while taking a 45-0 at half time.
Six of the Peterite tries were goaled while five conversions were missed. But it never mattered to the Peterites as they could have even crossed the Mahanama line more than what they did.
The match got off to a delayed start as both teams were found to be wearing jerseys of similar colour and design and it was left to the Peterites to change their attire and slip into an all-yellow jersey.
But the change in the jersey never mattered as the Peterites broke down all the few moves that the Mahanama players made with some hard and firm tackles.
As the scores indicated, the Peterites dominated the scrums and line-outs and their backs ran the ball at every given opportunity.
They could have scored more if not for some casual handling of the ball after they surged into a 45-0 lead at half time.
