Another deluge for under-siege Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka in all probability may have to kiss the Women’s Cricket World Cup goodbye in the event of defeat against South Africa or having yet another washout at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo today.

With Sri Lanka agreeing to host matches during the month of October which is usually associated with rain and thunderstorms and no rest days set aside, the home team cannot afford another defeat or washout after matches against Australia and New Zealand were washed out and the points shared.

Defeats against India and England have also given Sri Lanka no place to hide and the team’s opponents today South Africa is a team on the rise and aiming for a semifinal berth.

Australia, England and India are also up and running for slots in the semifinals as is New Zealand while Bangladesh like Sri Lanka has only and outside chance leaving Pakistan a team that may end up at the bottom of the table after heavy rain in Colombo deprived them of a certain win against Australia.

But Sri Lanka has only itself to blame more than the rainy conditions after the batting let the side down against defeats against India and Australia.

Only once did the team’s batting click with Chamari Atapattu and Nilakshi de Silva striking half centuries while Vishmi Gunaratne returned to some form opening the innings against the Kiwis in their last match.

The match between Australia and Pakistan was the third match of the World Cup to be washed out in Colombo.
