The Department of Sports Development (DSD) has launched an internal investigation into the authenticity of sports qualification certificates submitted by a senior official currently serving as a vice president of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVB), the Daily Mirror learns.
The inquiry follows a complaint alleging that documents submitted by the official to establish eligibility for contesting the SLVB election may contain irregularities. According to sources, the DSD’s Internal Audit Investigation Committee has commenced a formal examination into the matter to verify the authenticity of the sports certificates that formed part of the official›s nomination papers.
As part of the investigation, Director of Sports I. Wijerathna has written to the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, requesting the immediate submission of the original sports qualification certificate of the official when contesting the post of vice president, together with a certified copy of the document. The letter instructs the SLVB to forward the documents without delay to the Chairman of the DSD’s Internal Audit Investigation Committee to facilitate the inquiry.
The official under investigation is also reported to hold several committee chairmanships within the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL).
The Department of Sports Development has not publicly commented on the progress of the investigation, while no response from the official concerned or the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation was available at the time of reporting. The investigation is expected to determine whether the documents submitted during the 2025 SLVB election process complied with the eligibility requirements prescribed under the federation’s constitution and the regulations governing national sports associations.
