The Sri Lanka National rugby outfit, playing under the Olympic Committee of Asia (OCA) flag, ended their campaign at the 19th Asian Games in China yesterday, beating Nepal 68-00 before being edged out by Thailand 10-07.
Though they did not win a medal, the team representing Sri Lanka had little preparation and showed improvement in each game they played and looked a different outfit and a yard faster as the game matured. They handed off minnows Nepal 68-00 with ten unanswered tries, but lost to Thailand after losing star player and skipper Tharinda Ratwatte due to a concussion.
Anjula Hettiarachchi (2), Kavindu de Costa (2), Dharshana Dabare (2), Adeesha Weerathunge, Tharinda Ratwatte, Ramesh Fernando and Dinupa Seneviratne scored the tries against Nepal.
Conversions were put over by Tharinda (4), Kavindu (3), Adeesha (1) and Dinupa (1).
Meanwhile in the Thailand encounter Adam Gauder scored the solitary try. Hong Kong won the Gold Medal beating South Korea 14-07 in the final.
Japan got the better of China to win the Silver.
In the Women’s segment China won Gold, Japan won Silver, while Hong Kong took away Bronze.
