The Sri Lankan rugby team, playing under the Olympic Committee of Asia (OCA) flag at the Asian Games, won both of their matches in China yesterday.
They registered their first win in the Asian Games when they beat Afghanistan 36-10.
Raveen de Silva (2), Gemunu Chethiya (2), Adessha Weerathunge and Adam Gauder scored tries, while Tharinda Ratwatte converted three of them.
Later they got the better of Philippines with some cohesive rugby, scoring three converted tries.
Akash Maduranga, Heshan Jensen and Gauder scored with Ratwatte converting all the tries, for a 21-12 win.
They will next play Nepal and Thailand which will determine the final position of the team.
Meanwhile Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and China moved forward to the Cup segment with the semi-final winners and third-place play-off winners receiving medals.
