Andre Russell checks on Usman Khawaja after hitting him on the head with a bouncer
Australia’s World Cup preparations have taken a hit in their warm-up game against the West Indies after Usman Khawaja copped a nasty knock to the head and was taken to hospital for scans on his jaw.
Opening the batting, Khawaja was struck by a brute of a ball from his former Sydney Thunder teammate Andre Russell in the second over of Australia’s run chase in a practice match at Southampton’s Nursery Ground yesterday.
Khawaja indicated to an area on the right side of his head after the blow and looked in some discomfort as he was escorted off the field by team doctor Richard Saw.
He was sent for scans soon after and is not expected to play any further part in the match.
Khawaja’s presence at the top of the order had seen David Warner pushed down to number three, but if Khawaja is sidelined due to the injury, it could pave the way for Warner to return to the opening spot he occupied before his ban.
