Air Force Sports Club have taken a commanding grip on the Plate segment of the inter-club rugby League after a resounding victory over Navy SC last weekend to underline their title credentials. The emphatic win has given the Airmen clear breathing space at the top of the Plate standings, while Police SC have also shown encouraging signs of a late surge. The Plate segment resumes on February 6, when Navy SC host Police SC at Welisara, followed by the clash between Army SC and Air Force SC at Panagoda on February 7.

Both encounters are scheduled to kick off at 4 pm and expected to have a significant bearing on the final standings. Police SC, after an ordinary start to the season, appear to have found cohesion and confidence in recent outings. Their resurgence has been driven by the influential performances of their Fijian recruit, Kaliova Mocetadra who has been outstanding in both attack and defence.

Strong support from the front and backline and leadership from the skipper Shanaka Harischandra have added much-needed balance to the Police outfit.

Navy SC, despite failing to convert performances into results, possess several match-winners in their ranks. Their skipper has led from the front, while consistent contributions from their senior players have kept them competitive. Playing at Welisara, Navy SC will be keen to finally translate promise into points. Isuru Perera and Isuru Kongahawatte play a vital role. On the following day at Panagoda, Army SC face a stern test against the in-form Air Force side. Army will rely heavily on their experienced campaigners and leadership group to counter the Airmen’s momentum.

Air Force SC, however, look well set to continue their dominance. With a settled combination, strong leadership and confidence high, they start as favourites and further strengthen their hold on the Plate segment.
