Colombo, June 15 (Daily Mirror) - The National Housing Authority has allocated funds for the reconstruction of 2,844 abandoned houses in the Northern and Eastern provinces.
Deputy Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply T.B. Sarath said that the initiative is being carried out under the National Housing Programme titled “A Place of Our Own – A Beautiful Life”, aimed at addressing long-standing housing issues in the region.
He made these remarks during an observation tour conducted today (15) to assess the current status of housing and water supply projects in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. The tour focused on the conditions of housing schemes implemented in areas including Kappachi village in Settikulam, Vavuniya.
Authorities said that many housing projects had been left incomplete due to earlier financial allocations of Rs. 100,000 provided during the 2015–2019 period, with the remaining funds not being released, resulting in stalled construction work.
It was also observed that the Resettlement Division has allocated Rs. 2 million per house for the construction of 2,500 houses in the region, with cheques currently being issued for the first phase. In addition, 1,000 housing units are being constructed under the Housing Development Authority’s housing assistance programme.
