The youth have much more to do than staging protests

Youth representing several youth clubs gathered in front of the Maharagama Youth Services Council urging the government to avoid politicising youth clubs. To begin with, these youth clubs were defunct in most areas of the country for the longest time. These clubs have been established to allow youth in different parts of the country to gather and serve their communities. They engage in fundraising initiatives for various projects, organising dansal, blood donation campaigns, health camps and other initiatives. During such engagements, youth have the opportunity to take leadership, develop team spirit and improve their decision-making skills. Without such opportunities, the youth are often misled into wrongdoings and may become vulnerable towards drug addiction and other vices. The Youth Club Federation coming under the purview of the Youth Services Council had carried out certain initiatives across the country, but it could have done much more to encourage youth to become more active in various spheres. With the recent turn of events, youth representing various clubs were up in arms against the government for alleged politicisation and nepotism within youth clubs. But rather than blaming the government on various allegations, the youth in this country need to take more responsibilities onto their shoulders. They need to go beyond the thinking of their own political parties and unite as one force -- after all, the future belongs to them.
