Empowering Citizens Against Bribery: A Step Further

04 Aug 2025 - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

The new Bribery Commissioner and his team are indeed performing a daunting task in combating corruption and promoting transparency in governance. Their efforts deserve commendation and appreciation. We are sure that the government will not resort to favouritism to friends to hinder its determination.

But, it is public  knowledge that many ordinary, uneducated, or rural citizens including yours truly are unaware of the actions they can take when faced with demands for bribes by government officials.

To bridge this knowledge gap and empower citizens, I suggest that the Bribery Commission issue a widely publicised circular outlining the correct procedures for handling such situations.

The circular should include essential information such as:

  •  Relevant sections of the law that prohibit bribery and outline the consequences for offenders
  •  Step-by-step instructions on how to report bribery demands, including documentation and evidence collection
  •  Contact details, including telephone numbers and email addresses, of the Bribery Commission and other relevant authorities where complaints can be lodged
  •  Guidance on how to seek protection confidentiality and support as a whistle-blower

By disseminating this information widely, the Bribery Commission can empower citizens to take action against corruption and create a culture of transparency and accountability. I hope the Bribery Chief will consider this suggestion and take necessary steps to educate and provide arms to citizens against bribery.
