Many flat dwellers in Armour Street, Maligawatte, etc are facing unnecessary hardship due to the closure of the built-in garbage disposal facility — a challenge that disproportionately affects women, the elderly, and working residents.
In numerous cases, mothers must carry both their infants and bags of garbage down several flights of stairs, often when their spouses are away at work. Some are even compelled to leave small children alone in locked homes just to dispose of waste. Senior citizens, already struggling with mobility issues, are forced to undertake this taxing chore daily.
For office workers, the task often means interrupting their morning routine, risking soiling their work attire, or sacrificing valuable time before heading out. The stress intensifies when residents arrive at the roadside only to find the garbage truck has already left, forcing them to store waste longer — increasing the risk of foul odours, rodent infestations, and insect breeding.
In some cases, residents even skip bathing in the morning to avoid missing the garbage truck, prioritising the removal of garbage over their own comfort and hygiene. This is neither dignified nor practical.
Restoring the original built-in disposal system would alleviate these daily struggles, ensure proper waste management, and protect the health and well-being of the community.
I request the newly elected Mayor Vraie Balthazaar to comply with this request.
