Workers stage token strike demanding salary increase

The employees of Palaviya Salt Company in Puttalam yesterday staged a token strike demanding a salary increase.   More than 300 permanent and casual employees participated.   They warned that they would resort to continual trade union action if their demand was not met. They accused the government in power in 1997 of privatizing the salterns which had been a government corporation. They also said a leading businessman in the board of directors who is motivated by earning profits alone has ignored the rights of the employees.
