Colombo, June 14 (Daily Mirror) - The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has carried out a special inspection raid on a leading supermarket in the Kollupitiya area over the sale of imported packaged food products allegedly lacking mandatory labeling information.
During the operation, officials found a large stock of food items displayed for sale without essential consumer details such as importer information, Maximum Retail Price (MRP), batch numbers, manufacturing and expiry dates, and ingredient lists.
Investigators further said that many of the products carried labels exclusively in foreign languages, without any clear or accessible information for local consumers as required under consumer protection regulations.
The CAA said that such practices may mislead consumers and pose potential risks to health and safety, as buyers are unable to properly verify product contents or usage instructions before purchase.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against the establishment, and authorities said strict action will be taken upon completion of the investigation. Consumers have also been urged to carefully check all mandatory labeling details before purchasing packaged food items and to report violations through the 1977 hotline.
