A wild elephant that had strayed into a home garden at  Paluwaddana village in Hingurakgoda has been shot dead, and the carcass  was recovered last morning by a team of wildlife officers from Kaudulla  National Park who visited the scene after receiving information from the residents of  the area.

Officials said the well-grown jumbo, about 20 years of age, had been shot dead with a muzzle loader gun. They said it had been shot  in the head. They said the owner of the home garden was not available for questioning, and they were conducting further investigations to trace his  whereabouts.
