The carcass of a wild elephant, run over by a train was recovered yesterday afternoon from Ruwanpitiya in Welikanda.
Wildlife officials said the jumbo was about 8ft tall and between 35 and 40 years of age. It had been run over by the Maho bound parcel train from Batticaloa.
They said they attempted to save the life of the injured jumbo but to no avail. Officials said a herd of ten wild elephants were frequenting the Ruwanpitiya tank bund and one of them had been run over by the train.
Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Sameera Kalinguarachchi was scheduled to perform the post mortem.
