Colombo, June 20 (Daily Mirror) - The government could pass on the benefits of lower global fuel prices to the public by August or September, provided international fuel prices remain at their current levels, Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake said.
Speaking on the current fuel pricing situation, the Minister stressed that the government has no intention of making profits from fuel sales.
He said the government is already subsidising fuel prices by approximately Rs. 100 per litre of diesel and around Rs. 20 per litre of petrol to ease the burden on the public.
Rathnayake further explained that fuel procurement cannot be carried out immediately like purchasing goods from a regular market, noting that fuel must be obtained through proper tender procedures at pre-agreed prices.
