Wild elephant rescued from unprotected well

A wild elephant that fell into an unprotected well at Nallamudawa in Eppawala was saved yesterday by the Wildlife Officers with great difficulty and released to Nallamudawa forest reserve.

Officials said the unprotected well had been dug up by farmers carrying out Chena cultivation in Kolongashandiya forest reserve in Nallamudawa. They said they rushed to the scene on information from a villager. The officials said the rescue operation was a risky undertaking for them.
