The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) announced that it will act as a facilitator for foreign tourists seeking permission to operate drone cameras in the country for tourism promotion purposes.
SLTPB Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam said the bureau is prepared to assist visitors by providing the required documentation and coordinating necessary approvals from the Ministry of Defence and the Civil Aviation Authority.
He said the move aims to support foreign content creators and social media influencers in showcasing Sri Lanka’s tourist attractions while ensuring compliance with national security regulations.
However, Hewawasam said that no foreign tourist will be permitted to fly drones without prior approval, as unauthorized drone use — particularly in sensitive areas — poses potential security risks.
He added that in recent years, a number of foreign tourists have been arrested for operating drones without authorization, underscoring the need for a clear and lawful process.
